It quickly became clear that synchronous meetings weren't going to be easily organized. We ended up having a never-ending text-based Google Hangout; installing that app on my phone meant we could ask or answer questions quickly without being confined to desktop time. Having a text record of everyone's contribution meant we could catch up on anything we'd missed. It was surprising how easily we communicated!

I usually take on the math exam and after completing some new problem solving questions, I'll share them by messenger or email as a word doc. What we ought to do is use a something like Google docs so people could add comments and make corrections in real time. Even the final process of signing off on each exam is tedious without each person able to see the latest version all at once. We often end up with problems that stem from printing one of the three or four "Final Drafts" that get floated out by email.
-Ryan Dorey

I work in a distributed team (mostly across North America), but also connecting with Europe. Having tools for both desktop and mobile collaboration is critical. Tools that we use include the office365 suite (also known as the MS version of the Google Suite) - that gives us cloud storage, sharepoint, MS Teams, etc. MS Teams (MS version of Slack) lets us have teams, channels, threaded discussions, share files and also make calls and video.

And as a student - I find that my "teams" tend to rally around Google really quickly - and we've been experimenting with Slack.

That's all the good stuff. The bad and the ugly? Poor internet connections, poor audio set up (microphones, headphones, etc... are good and cheap), dogs barking, delays in audio where everyone ends up talking over one another, and the times where things just don't work (or maybe it is user error!).

--Lee

I have used both OneNote and Blackboard Collaborate, to varying degrees of success, with my grade 8 English students. I have had students collaboratively write and edit material.

I would love to have students from different disciplines, parts of the world, or even ages, work collaboratively on larger projects. The promises of the technology were considerably bigger than my utilization.
MIchael

Endless Possibilities

When I think of mobile collaboration, I think of endless possibilities and opportunities not just to learn but to interact with different peoples across the globe. This type of interaction has increased my knowledge because I get to communicate with a diverse group of individuals and share different perspectives. For example, in my MET courses I have had the opportunity to interact with people from Oman, China, Costa Rica, and France not to mention all the individuals who were traveling while studying in the program. Throughout my MET journey, I have used countless tools for collaboration such as Google Hangouts, Google Docs, Slack, and many others. Through mobile devices, I am able to have access to conversations with group members any time and keep up to date with any changes that may be happening. I think of the flexibility that mobile collaboration allows us and how it encourages a learning environment where users can synergistically communicate to solve problems.

-Sabrina Nijjar

Wide array of tools

When I think of mobile collaboration I think of tools that allow us to connect with one another with the purpose of working towards a common goal. There area wide array of tools that come to mind. I think of Google Docs, Sheets, and Drive that give users vast abilities to collaborate. I think of Slack, Asana, Padlet, Google Hangouts, and Whatsapp. I also think of social media such as Reddit, Facebook and Linkedin. I think of communities of practice that have been setup on mobile platforms.

All of these tools are available on desktop however their collaborative affordances are maximized when using a mobile device. For many, their mobile device is accessible for the majority of their waking hours (and sleeping hours too!) allowing for easy access at all times and are more likely to see notifications that are pushed to them.

-Derek

Redpen

One of my favourite mobile collaboration tools that not many people may have heard of is Redpen. Redpen is a tool initially created for mobile collaboration of designers. The app allows you to upload design revisions, and peers are able to click and comment on specific parts of your design. Each posted note can receive additional comments and feedback, and others reviewing the document can add their own 'likes' to posted comments. Users can upload drafts of designs onto previous revisions in order to compare versions. It's a really useful tool that can be used on desktop or mobile, and is fantastic for collaboration. I think it could have many useful implications for non-designers in a classroom, and allow peers working together in group settings to collaborate and share ideas and updates.

- Jay
