I am interested in reading The Music Teacher’s Guide to Engaging English Language Learners by Angela Ammerman. I plan to participate in the “Orff: Pliable Process, Adapting for All” course offered by George Mason University this July. To help kids overcome the impacts of culture and learning differences, I created a "Musical Roots" project in my classroom. Each kid was asked to present a song, instrument, or musical legacy from their own ethnic or family heritage. We listened to and discussed these selections as a class, honoring the diversity of our musical backgrounds. This project taught children to appreciate differences, question assumptions, and recognize that everyone brings their unique skills and stories to our learning community. This promoted respect, empathy, and a sense of belonging in all students.

The most significant learning challenge I faced during the program was managing the pre-production, shooting, and post-production of five teaching videos. Coordinating schedules with instructors, adapting to unexpected events like safety drills and field trips, and working with very young students who had limited group activity experience added to the complexity. I overcame these challenges through constant communication with the class teacher and paraeducator, flexibility in adjusting plans, and collaborative problem-solving. Over time, the students’ familiarity and proficiency improved, making the process smoother.
