I made two mood boards to explore both style and theme. The left is stylistic choices, such as aggressive colours like red and yellow to connote danger and urgency. The use of impactful line and large blocks of colour creates a graphic, printed feel, which signifies the work as part of a revolutionary movement. I looked at revolution within LGBTQ+ communities and how this would be represented, and ended up choosing this to create a response on.

I wanted to focus on typography and composition in my poser, so I designed my own title. I wanted to use large, sharp letters to catch the eye as large areas would be blocked out, allowing me to use a darker toned colour to become the focus of the piece. I put one of the 'e's onto of the other to offset the alignment of the text, representing how being queer is perceived as going against societal norms by queer phobic people. I wanted people who looked at 'Guide to life*' to double take, looking for the '*'. This is at the bottom, hiding itself from the title. This mirrors how people who are cishet will say they are not queer phobic, however will still act out in a discriminatory way. They may say all the phrases in the speech bubble, but disguise it as being supportive. I would like to experiment with more colours without changing the tonal scale of the piece, perhaps designing them as a set in the colours of the pride flag. This could expand my design skills by thinking about how each piece interacts with each other.

I created different spirals with different shapes as a response to the literal theme of 'revolving'. This is an interesting concept, focusing on the revolution of art and using maths and fractals rather than realism.

I created a political piece using collage to mimic the style of revolutionary collage used in the 70s. I used a various images to create a character, however I did not finish this as it took a long time to edit each piece and I did not want to work in this style. Although it was good to experiment with different mediums, I couldn't represent my chosen aspects of revolution as easily in with digital collage as I felt I have less control.

Industrial revolution

I created a Mood board focused on the industrial revolution and wastelands as this interests me due to the monochromatic styles and dramatic skylines. I looked at landscapes as I believe this is the most recognisable aspect of the industrial revolution. I would like to use this imagery as either a direct comment on industrialisation or as a style to carry other issues like education or anarchy.

I created a mood board of natural spirals found in nature to help me visualise the natural aspects of the theme. I really like the different textures and how almost other worldly nature looks. I am interested in landscapes, so using spirals in foliage may be interesting and add physical revolution to my pieces.

Colour Tests

I found some images and used the image trace function on Adobe Illustrator to create bold, graphic outlines. I then printed these out and created physical collages to colour. I used alcohol markers to add colour. I really liked the monochrome grey piece, as the mix of warm and cool greys allowed me to differentiate surfaces while still looking bare and grimy. I also really liked using blue and green, as this created a very dark and dingy feeling while still being brighter and more interesting than the greys. Overall, I want to use greys with a possible hint of blues and green.

I used tracing paper to trace many different faces overlapping, creating a large image of faces. I was testing themes of beauty and how many of the women cannot be recognised when in a sea of faces, presenting magazines as removing identity from women. In the end I decided to move away from these themes as I wanted to look into other topics.

I created physical responses in watercolour, charcoals, pencils and digitally. These were to practice each medium to choose which one I liked the most, as well as creating artist responses. These informed me which medium I would like to use going forwards. I want to use charcoals, as I can get very fine details and only 2-3 tones in my work, which will image trace nicely in Illustrator.

After reviewing my artist research and perspective work, I felt like my work could be lacking and this would create a boring piece. After looking at my visual pieces and rereading my work, I decided I wanted to move away from some of the realism and create warped buildings that seem to move and change. This would cater to my own more cartoony style, as well as letting me play around with interesting composition to differentiate my work. I want to create some quick responses to ensure I enjoy this style.

I image traced my charcoal drawings to see if they create interesting texture like my other pieces. I really like how this came out, with small details being represented clearly that I liked in the original drawing. The best piece was the trees, so I will use this as a reference for my final.

After reviewing my work, I have decided I want to look at how political violence can cause people to be silenced. I want to represent this through having an empty street with signs of people trying to speak out, however they are locked inside. I want to work posters and bars into my work, showing how people in power can physically restrain you from speaking out.
