In this resource, the Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center and Boston Children’s Hospital created a 7-part module for parents of children who are deaf or hard of hearing. The modules address early identification of hearing loss, early intervention opportunities, and language acquisition for this population. This program is available in both American Sign Language and spoken English, both with closed captions. 

In this resource, the authors, David Rainey and Sallie McBrien, suggest tips on how to set up your home to accommodate children who are deaf or hard of hearing. The authors talk about changes to the home design and technology that can be helpful for the child to navigate the hearing world in their home.

The American Society for Deaf Children’s main tagline is “Bringing Families Together Through American Sign Language”. This sums up their goal of offering a resource to families to easily access a way to learn sign language, if that is what they want to pursue. This site offers online ASL classes and offers a program titled “Friends Like Me” which gives children with hearing loss, a safe place to meet others like them! 

This article is a personal story written by Joe Mussomeli, a 15-year old who grew up with a brother who had severe hearing loss. Joe shares some of the challenges he faced growing up, such as watching the stress his parents endured, and feeling left out. This article shares how Alex coped with the challenges he faced, and what he learned about supporting a sibling with hearing loss. Joe’s perspective can be helpful for children who are going through the same experiences, so that they can feel seen and supported. 

Sibling Support Project 

This resource includes books, publications, online/in-person trainings, podcasts, and online support groups for siblings of people with developmental and mental health disabilities. This resource aims to help siblings of disabled people to understand, advocate, and support their families and themselves. The online support groups allow for the siblings to interact and connect with other people who may share similar experiences and a safe space to talk about the challenges/benefits and learning opportunities they face as a stakeholder for their siblings with disabilities.

This site is a great resource to help explain how important it is to include and help siblings to adjust to their sibling having a hearing loss. The article poses common questions about how parents can help the child with a hearing loss’s siblings to understand what a hearing loss is and how it impacts their sibling. The main take away from this resource is a first step to encourage parents in how to navigate this new world and how to siblings in every aspect. 

This interview article is written by Carly Sygrove, a hearing loss blogger who lives in Madrid. Following her hearing loss in 2016, she started a blog to share her story and connect with others who have various types of hearing loss. This interview highlights Eva, a 45-year-old woman from California who reached out to Carly two months after experiencing a profound sudden hearing loss in her left ear. Eva discusses how her life has changed and the most challenging parts about living with hearing loss. She even shares some words of wisdom for those who have experienced a sudden hearing loss. Eva's story is truly inspiring.

This article from the Connecticut Children’s blog page is about a 17-year-old woman named Annabelle Jacobs who was diagnosed with a moderate to severe hearing loss at birth. She is a Youtuber who has a successful Youtube page called Hear for Hope which documents her experiences with having a hearing loss. She covers topics such as her experience with lip reading all the way to how it’s like with wearing hearing aids at a swimming pool. Families who follow her page love how her videos connect those who are also going through a hearing loss and educate them on different experiences. Her documentation of her experiences with hearing loss is inspiring and also provides a platform for more advocacy to be created within the hearing loss community. 

This resource is an article by Gary E. Wait which educates about the American School for the Deaf in West Hartford and the history that is involved with the school. It touches upon how the school has evolved to change the curriculum based on the changing needs of the Deaf/Hard of hearing community. This article goes into detail about the different kinds of classes that were taught there and how some classes evolved and changed to other subjects based on the needs of the students. 

Hands & Voices is an organization run by parents who collaborate with professionals in the field to discuss the life experiences of adults who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. This site opens with a map of the United States where the user can click on their state to see what resources are available to them. This site offers support groups, ways to become part of the community and a comprehensive look at the family and individual journey.
