In the movie it is shown to us that these robots such as Joe can think for themselves and also experience some level of conciousness. Thus, why when we see them destroyed in a yard surrounded by people for entertainment we are forced to ask ourselves whether such a thing is humane. We can either accept that these are our creations who experience counciousness or disregard them as nothing more then machines.

Roles such as sex workers, nanny's etc. Society accepts robots but also has to deal with the repercussions of building so many robots. Those repercussions being the handling and hunting of old robots. In this movie, same as the other A.I is just viewed as tools or machinery.
