Reconciliation is a complicated topic to discuss for me, as my own opinions sometimes differ from and other times are similar to the opinions of Indigenous peoples'. I have read some of the Calls to Action and I personally think they are realistic and feasible for the government of Canada. A lot of the calls to action are what I would call the bare minimum, such as the ones asking for improvement on the education, culture and heritage aspect. I believe this is integral to reconciliation, as many Canadians know next to nothing about their own Indigenous history, while newcomers often are more interested in learning or already arrive with some knowledge on the topic. As individuals, the least we can do is educate ourselves. As Pam Palmater rightfuly said in the video of the panel shared on blackboard, reconciliation also means making sure that Indigenous peoples have the same quality of life as other people do in Canda which means having access to clean water, free healthcare and access to a justice system free of prejudice and racism. In the end, I believe reconciliation will not be achieved in one way for everyone. Every Indigenous community has their own history and as such should be given the respect they deserve.

Reconciliation Through Respect - Lysandra Mahendran

I think reconciliation is a tough thing to reach as we spoke in class about how reconciliation means to get back to how things were. I think our Truth and Reconciliation actions or RCAP calls to action are ways to START respecting and mending what was broken back in the day. I appreciate Vowel's words of how 'yes things were horrible back then, but please pay attention to how things are still horrible and not fair at all'. I would love to see the government take louder actions and show their attention and respect towards the calls. Before this class, I knew nothing about this and more people need to know what's wrong and what specific actions the government is taking to fix these issues; human rights issues! We all have an important role in ensuring we are speaking up, taking action ourselves, and continuing to find ways to band together with the Indigenous communities.

My thoughts on reconciliation are that it's going to be a tough road to get to a place where Indigenous people can have the rights they deserve. Reconciliation means going back to a good place after an argument or issue. In my opinion, based on the history I have personally learned, I do not think settlers and Canadians were ever in a positive place to begin with. I do believe that one day we can get to a point where we can live harmoniously. We need to change our ways and get to work, we can make this happen, we just need to put the effort in. I hope that the government takes the Calls to Action, movements and all forms of advocating and protesting seriously. There are reasons as to why they are happening, so why not take it seriously and consider what they are saying? I know that it takes time and effort in order to change treaties and laws and such, but for humanity and rightfulness, we can take that step. As citizens, there's so much we can do. First, gaining knowledge, and being aware of the situation is a big step from the ignorance most people are living in today. Second, we educate, tell those around us, and share what we've learned. Third, make conscious efforts to be inclusive and live with the right message in Canada. Last, advocate and take steps towards reconciliation. We could one day get to the point of living in harmony, and I hope to be around to see it.

Reconciliation involves long term process which should be used to counter the historical injustice, systemic exclusion and cultural eradication done against First Nation peoples. This involves admitting one’s wrongdoings in the past, recognising current prejudices and inequities, and making efforts to foster a just and honourable society.

Indeed, for the government reconciliation is not a mere talk but real actions. These include the implementation of truth and reconciliation commission report calls to actions, respecting the treaties’ rights, equitable distribution of natural resources like healthcare and education, and work closely with indigenous communities to address their interests. There is also the funding support for facilitation of Indigenous-led initiative and self-governance.

The notion of reconciliation therefore also encompasses individual citizens. Firstly, we should begin getting acquaint with Indigenous histories, cultures, as well as contemporary issues. For instance, listening to Indigenous views, encouraging the growth of Indigenous owned small businesses, ensuring equality for the indigenous people, and amplifying indigenous perspectives. We should also practice mutual respect during conversations, demolish stereotypical thinking and misrepresentations, in order to build a better community.

Finally, reconciliation focuses upon developing trusting relationships that are founded upon recognition and honest relations among both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal individuals. Chunking out the institutional racism and creating a society where indigenous culture is alive & indigenous people are respected.

Reconciliation is a mixed process involving acknowledgment, apology, and systemic change to address historical injustices. Governments can lead by officially recognizing past wrongs, implementing inclusive policies, and encouraging diverse representation. On an individual level, education, empathy, and advocacy play important roles. Citizens can educate themselves on historical contexts, engage in open dialogue with different communities, and actively support initiatives promoting equality. Reconciliation requires collective commitment to understanding, empathy, and concrete actions aimed at rectifying past injustices and building a more equitable society.

: - Ankush Kumar

I believe that reconciliation is a necessary step for this country. If you want Canada to become more prosperous, then everyone living here needs to work hard for this goal, and reconciliation can unite people in the country, which will not only reduce internal consumption, but also gain the wisdom of indigenous people help. In order to achieve this goal, the government should take action in education to let students understand the relevant knowledge of indigenous people as early as possible, and organize activities related to indigenous culture in the community, so that more people can understand indigenous people, promoting this important event of reconciliation. In this process, citizens play a very important role. Because citizens are the ones who actually want to make changes, reconciliation can only be truly completed when every citizen and indigenous people can respect and understand each other.
