First Mask in the Mask Project Assignment

Started messing around with different facial features and designs that I wanted. I began with using my hand and going with the flow. I tried to create something out of the creativity of my mind rather than a photo. Although some aspects differed as a sort of African Cultural Mask, many of the other aspects resided of my own.

This was the initial design of my mask that I went with!

This was the beginning of my process:
I started by grabbing my board and setting up the crumpled paper to act as a soft bed for my clay to rest on as I begin to work on it. Water being paper, absorbs moisture, therefore I laid the thin layer of plastic above the paper so the moisture wouldn't be soaked out of my piece.

These were the final aspects of my mask:
Although it wasn't required in the initial process, this was my hollowing out process where I took my mask and trimmed the back until each part had a thickness of around a half inch or less. This is because if not, I wouldn't be able to fire my mask. Plus the holes on the back act as air holes so my mask doesn't blow up to the massive amount of heat in the kiln.

This next step I began to pay more attention to detail and really started to dig into the clay. I really started to shape the clay and move it around the places that I wanted it permanently. The creation of the mouth came naturally as I measured in the other facial features that I created.

This became around the final design of what my mask would look like without design on it.

This part of my process is where I started to mess around with designs and texturing. I textured the cheeks of my mask using something as simple as a ballpoint pen. It created this cool hole pattern that I stuck with and even continued it towards the top of the mask(forehead portion).
