Erikson's trust vs mistrust stage takes place between ages 0 to 1.5 years old. The results of this first stage of development is determined by the quality of care provided by the child's primary caregiver. If good care is given then trust will be result. If poor or negligent care is given mistrust will be the result. The book states it this way, "From warm, responsive care, infants gain a sense of trust, or confidence, that the world is good" (Berk, 10). Personally, my parents provided good quality care leading to a result of trust for this stage. Some of the good quality aspects that were provided, as the book pointed out, was relieving discomfort promptly, holding me gently, waiting until I had enough milk, etc.

Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt

Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt stage happens between ages 1.5 to 3 years old. During this stage, as a child is learning how to do new things like using the toilet, the parents responses to especially failure, is essential. If the parent responds with harsh criticism, then shame and doubt will be the result. The book even points out that even if a toddler acts independently when learning new things like, "using the toilet, eating with a spoon, or putting toys away" even tolerating and understanding, can lead to a result of autonomy (Berk, 172). For me personally, my result for this stage was autonomy. I personally was very independent, especially when it came to toilet training. But instead of my parents getting frustrated and criticizing me, they supported encouraged me.

Initiative vs. Guilt

Erikson's development stage Initiative vs. Guilt happens during ages 3 to 5 years old. At this age, is when children start attending school. Their interaction with other kids highly influences this development stage along with pretend play. But the parents are still influential. When the parents are patient and reasonable with the child, this helps lead to a result of initiative. But if the parent becomes inpatient and/or overbearing, then guilt can be the result. During this stage, as the book pointed out, "preschoolers acquire the moral and gender-role standards of their society" (Berk, 246). For me personally, the result of this development stage was initiative. While I didn't attend preschool, I did have interactions with other children through church were I was able to build playful relations. But along with that as I continued to learned new things and gain more independence, my parents weren't overbearing or overly strict.

Industry vs. Interiority

In this stage of Erikson's development, there are several factors that come into play when it comes to results in the industry vs. interiority stage of development. While the parents influence is still great, teachers and peers also become influential. If kids receive negative feedback from parents, teachers, and peers it can lead to the result for this stage as interiority. Academic performance, peer interaction, and performance in physical activities also play a huge interaction. The book points out that this stage of development is resolved when, "experiences lead children to develop a sense of competence at useful skills and tasks" (Berk, 321). Personally, the result for this stage was industry. I had positive feedback from family, peers, and teachers. I performed well academically and in sports. Plus had positive interaction with fellow peers.

Identity vs. Role Confusion

This stage of development takes place during ages 12-18. This stage is highly influenced by the previous developmental stages results. If the results of the previous stages had a poor result, then this stage will follow that same pattern. Being able to make the decisions they want to, fulfill their desires, and expand their abilities (all within reason) is essential for the result of this stage to be identity and not role confusion. The book even points out that, "If young people's earlier conflicts were resolved negatively or if society limits their choices to ones that do not match their abilities and desires, they may appear shallow, directionless, and unprepared for the challenges of adulthood" (page 398). Personally, this stage for me resulted in identity. Part of this is because all of the the previous stages of development turned out positive. Plus I had support to make my own choices and follow my desires.

Intimacy Vs. Isolation

The sixth stage of Erikson's stages of development is intimacy vs. isolation. For this stage, it includes the ages of 18-40. This stage focuses a lot on relationships in a person's life. While it does focus on friendships as well because those do continue to be important through early adulthood, it also focuses on intimate relationships as well. During this stage if a positive result is achieved, a person will have an intimate, long-term relationship, along with several well developed friendships. An important thing to note though with this stage is, "Because of earlier disappointments, some individuals cannot form close bonds and remain isolated" (Berk, 10). Another aspect to this stage is at this point they are diving into their careers and starting to work towards success in that.

This stage of development takes place in middle adulthood (ages 40-65). During this time, if the result is positive, a person will have "made their mark" in the world. This stage focuses on giving back to the community. There are several aspects to this stage of development for a positive result to take place. One of these things is raising children/forming a family. Another aspect is success at work and developing a career. But being involved in community activities and organizations also influences the outcome of this stage. Another important aspect overall, is success, if the person has failed or feels like they failed, it can lead to this stage of development being negative. As the book states, "The person who fails in these ways feels an absence of meaningful accomplishment" (Berk, 10).

Ego Integrity vs. Despair

This stage of development takes place from 65 years old to death. During this last stage of development a person begins to slow down and reflect on the life that they have lived. The outcome of this stage is dependent on how a person has lived their life and how they view it. If the person wasn't successful or had major regrets, then despair can be a result of this stage of life. It should also be noted that, "Older people who are dissatisfied with their lives fear death" (Berk, 10). But if the person was successful, lived their life to the fullest, and had no major regrets, then the outcome should be ego integrity. But it should be noted as well, that their is a balance between both if the person is wise.
