Because of the French and Indian war, Great Britain maintained a heavy military presence in the colonies. The quartering act made it so colonial assemblies had to shelter British soldiers. This lead to a majority of colonial legislatures refusing to fund royal soldiers' needs in rebellion against the British.

The British revoked the stamp act due to protest and outcry from the American colonists. In order to regain and restate their dominance over the colonies, the British passes the declaratory act which professed that Great Britain was able to rule over the American colonies however they pleased to. This lead to the colonists being satisfied that their efforts to get rid of the Stamp Act had finally panned out, but colonists were still discontent. They continued to protest against other British acts such as the Quartering Act as they still believed it was unjust.

1767 - Townshend Acts

The Townshend Act was created to put taxes on daily necessities such lead, paper, tea, paint and glass which were due at the port on the ships arrival. The duties collected from the products at port were used to fund British, judges, soldiers and governors, taking power away from colonial assemblies. The Townshend acts also created a commission for customs and suspended the New York assembly as they did not comply with the new act. This lead to a farmer from Pennsylvania to write a letter stating his dismay with the newly imposed British taxations, which gained so much traction that the letter was featured in nine colonial newspapers. This in turn lead to even greater boycotting of British goods which reduced trading to 50% of what it once was.

The East India Company had a major surplus of tea rotting in English warehouses. To alleviate the financial losses they were facing, the British decided to create and act that allowed the company to sell their tea in the American Colonies. The act however did not lift the taxation on imported tea, the last taxation remaining from the ever dwindling set of Townshend Acts. This lead to a group of rebels in Boston to dress up in Native American attire to throw dozens of chest of tea into the Boston harbor leading to the aptly named Boston Tea Party.

1774 - Intolerable Acts

The Intolerable Acts also known as the Coercive acts specifically had Massachusetts in its crosshairs. The act closed Boston Harbor in response to the Tea Party with the British demanding Boston to repay them for the financial loses from the wasted tea. Other acts from the set of many almost entirely stripped Massachusetts of the ability to self govern itself. The quartering act was also added upon, allowing British troops to take refuge in colonists private houses as needed. This lead to delegates from 12 colonies having a meeting to become known as the First Continental Congress, consequently boycotting British goods. The First Continental Congress sent a petition to the King declaring the rights of the colonists and their assemblies.
