Remember The Titans vs. Interpersonal Communication by

What better way to look at interpersonal communication than the game that requires 11 to work as 1? Athletes all around the world know that in order to succeed in their sport there must be interpersonal communication. A team is a machine, and in order to make the machine work all of the parts must work simultaneously without flaws. There are many different roles on a team, but none of them can be left out of the equation to win. From coaches, to starters, to benchwarmers, every team needs each to succeed. Whether or not a team is talented, communication is the key to success.

Expectancy Violations Theory

Expectancy Violations Theory, or EVT, is a theory of communication that analyzes how individuals respond to unanticipated violations of social norms and expectations. Therefore, it shows how people act when they get thrown for a loop in society against their usual way of living. Racism is a great example of this theory because when schools were integrated once upon a time some people weren't as accepting as others.

It didn't seem normal for these white folks in this scene to have to accept black people in society. The white people didn't even accept the "Hippie" as they called him from California and he was the same color as them. They didn't respond well to it as you will see in this clip. Many norms were broken in this movie which gives a dramatic look at many different theories.

This theory describes personal beliefs about different types of personalities and the ways in which traits cluster together. To say it differently, it describes how people react and treat people who seem different. We automatically notice when someone is different, but it is how we treat them when joint together that lets us understand this theory.

In this scene Robbie Bass known to his teammates as "Sunshine" moves into town from California. Back in this day and age there was a certain vision people had when Californians were mentioned. As you will see his long hair and colorful shirt gave the team the impression that he was homosexual. The team's captain Gerry Bertier along with the rest of the team quickly find out that their assumptions could be wrong with Ole Sunshine.

Face Negotiation Theory is used to understand how different cultures throughout the world respond to conflict. The theory posits “face”, or self-image, as a universal phenomenon that pervades across cultures. In conflicts, one’s face is threatened; and thus the person tends to save or restore his or her face. One will either save or lose face during an altercation. What I mean by saving face or not, has to do with whether a person can hold their composure or anger.

In this instance the team has just met and their is still much racial conflict between the young men. Gerry Bertier (Returning Team Captain) tries to show his dominance over (Future Team Captain) Julius Campbell by telling him to take down his poster. The result is what you could call "not saving face" as the two start a fight that results in a brawl between the whole team.

Social Penetration Theory describes how people peel back layers to reveal information about themselves. By learning things about each other people become closer. There are peripheral layers that include things like age, college major, and hometown. Once people pass this layer they get to the intermediate layers. This layer includes tastes, beliefs, and interests. Finally, people get to the central layers that hold values, traits, fears, and things like self esteem.

This theory binds well with this movie because in order to bond as a team you must know each other inside and out. In this scene the team has been through hell as they come to the end of summer camp. The two leaders of this team Gerry and Julius get the team together and prove that they, against all odds, have peeled through what seemed to be impenetrable layers and become brothers. This creates a bond between the team that will never be broken.

Communication accommodation theory (CAT) is a theory of communication developed by Howard Giles. It argues that "when people interact they adjust their speech, their vocal patterns and their gestures, to accommodate to others". When surrounded by something different people tend to adapt and change to become more familiar with their surroundings. It could even be as small as changing how you greet people.

The team shows that they have accommodated to each other by jazzing up their pregame warm-up and surprising not only the other team, but everyone in attendance. The white players that attended the school before were definitely not use to the "soul power" the black players brought this season, but they accommodated and became a better team because of it.

The idea that your self esteem results from comparing two metal standards: your ideal self ( the characteristics in which you want to posses based on your desires) and your ought self ( the person others want you to be) is known as Self Discrepancy Theory. There is a certain self in all of us who wants something that someone else might not want us to be, such as a parent or guardian. In certain situations you have to choose what the right "you" is.

In this scene Coach Yoast chooses to throw away his chances of being in the hall of fame for his players. He was told by a man on the board the week before that if he just lets the refs control the game then he will still earn his spot in the hall of fame. He chose to do the right thing and not just let the refs throw the game that his players had very well deserved to win. He chose to become his ideal self

Power is an integral part of any relationship, especially the relationship between teammates. This theory explains the idea that someone who has moderate power are most likely to use controlling communication. The captain of a football team is a perfect representation of this theory because they have power, but not as much as the coaches.

In this scene Gerry Bertier says to his coach that he wants Ray kicked off the team. He is using controlling communication because he knows that it will persuade the coach to get rid of Ray. Coach Boone ends up giving Gerry the decision and I think he did that because he respects him as a leader of the team, and Gerry was assertive and made it clear that he didn't want him around anymore. Gerry having moderate power over the team benefitted him by going to his coach and putting his opinion on the table.

The elaboration likelihood model of persuasion is a dual process theory describing the change of attitudes form. The model aims to explain different ways of processing stimuli, why they are used, and their outcomes on attitude change. There are always people who are going to change your attitudes whether its for the better or worse. Julius and Gerry started this movie as enemies being two of the most talented guys on the team. Color kept them apart.
