Just finished, I am wrecked. A graphic novel-memoir so meaningful to anyone with a crazy family or unconventional childhood. Have a tissue handy when you read the author's note.]]> 2019-06-14 17:06:51 UTC https://padlet.com/juliepuffer/dl98wsjs6mn/wish/367635665 juliepuffer https://padlet.com/juliepuffer/dl98wsjs6mn/wish/367904348 In an America, not-so-far into the future...This story imagines that Muslim-Americans are stripped of their rights and sent to internment camps in a similar manner to the treatment of Japanese citizens in WWII. Great premise, lots of political commentary- but some characters fell short. ]]> 2019-06-17 12:07:16 UTC https://padlet.com/juliepuffer/dl98wsjs6mn/wish/367904348 juliepuffer https://padlet.com/juliepuffer/dl98wsjs6mn/wish/367904880 Pretty haunting, post-apocalyptic story about indigenous people who are hunted by "recruiters" for their ability to dream.  Dreams are stolen by sucking the dreams from their marrow in a world that has been destroyed by climate change and whose citizens are tormented with dreamless sleep.
Powerful book, but mature content for middle school.

This time dealing with racial inequality. Very fast read. Some language that is very appropriate in context, but probably too mature for many of our kiddos. I liked the story and protagonist.]]> 2019-06-26 01:21:26 UTC https://padlet.com/juliepuffer/dl98wsjs6mn/wish/369200364 juliepuffer https://padlet.com/juliepuffer/dl98wsjs6mn/wish/369877059 Cute book. Would be great for 5/6 grades. It is a safe, sweet summer story.]]> 2019-07-01 23:53:31 UTC https://padlet.com/juliepuffer/dl98wsjs6mn/wish/369877059 juliepuffer https://padlet.com/juliepuffer/dl98wsjs6mn/wish/370522663 Magical Realism. This is definitely more YA, than MG. The discovery part of the characters' journey is fantastic. The resolution is not quite as strong, but still a great read (for this adult). Due to language and themes, I would be cautious with my student recommendations on this one. ]]> 2019-07-08 14:10:11 UTC https://padlet.com/juliepuffer/dl98wsjs6mn/wish/370522663 juliepuffer https://padlet.com/juliepuffer/dl98wsjs6mn/wish/370522906 Darius is a Persian-American who travels to Iran due to his maternal grandfather's brain cancer. He is a well-developed narrator who struggles with depression, his relationship with his father, and with his own identity. My favorite part of this book was the food/tea description. I looked up Iranian recipes while reading. ]]> 2019-07-08 14:12:46 UTC https://padlet.com/juliepuffer/dl98wsjs6mn/wish/370522906 juliepuffer https://padlet.com/juliepuffer/dl98wsjs6mn/wish/1602564049 Four kids with four different struggles become connected through art and messages of hope. "Because I realize: It doesn't matter how many times they ground me. Part of me is out there. In places I've never been. Affecting people I've never met. Making people smile like that. And there's no way they can stop it now. It's too big."]]> 2021-06-12 14:47:45 UTC https://padlet.com/juliepuffer/dl98wsjs6mn/wish/1602564049 26waldmani https://padlet.com/juliepuffer/dl98wsjs6mn/wish/1641351997 2021-07-08 04:05:20 UTC https://padlet.com/juliepuffer/dl98wsjs6mn/wish/1641351997
