         <description><![CDATA[<div>In India- where I have spend almost all my life learning and teaching, standardised testing is held in high esteem, It would not be wrong to say that it is the norm there. But in recent years studies have shown that there is extreme stress and negative behaviour attached to these tests and the prestige attached to them. So much so that a move towards continuous assessment is being made. But sadly this is mostly seen only in elementary grades.<br>I am an ardent believer of continuous and differential assessment. I firmly believe that it is unfair to assess an individual's abilities and aptitude based on one day, one test. I have seen very smart and intelligent students doing average on such tests and high scorers being very average in independent thinking and understanding of different concepts. <br>In Ontario EQAOs are one such test series- although not as much is at stake here but they are still a source of stress for many parents and students, and EQAO results are also considered as a criteria to check how good a school is (I wonder how that is determined). Having said this, the tests like EQAO do give us a fair idea of the areas wherein students are doing well and where do their challenges lie. It is good tool to inform future teaching strategies and focus areas. But the key is to not make them the be all and end all of education, to abstain from labeling individuals based on test scores and managing the stress associated with them.<br>I would like to conclude by saying that standardised tests can be a good tool but like mentioned earlier- if taken as one of many assessment tools and then to just inform future action plans.</div>]]></description>
