We often hear "burn out" and "compassion fatigue" used interchangeably, and I thought it was really interesting to think of these terms along a spectrum in terms of severity. Understanding that symptoms of compassion fatigue can be similar to PTSD helped me to see how serious this can become for those in the mental health field. I really resonated with the fact that counselors don't recognize the impact this can have not only on themselves, but the clients they work with. Understanding more about both, as well as the consequences if not addressed, has really prompted me to be mindful of the signs and symptoms as a current school counselor and as I transition into becoming an LPC.

The phrase "you cannot pour from an empty cup" is incredibly accurate for those in the mental health field. Because our jobs require us to step into incredibly difficult situations, we are constantly pouring ourselves out. Focusing on self-care and wellness is the way in which we ensure that our cups are not empty. Often people confuse taking time for yourself as being selfish, but it is the only way to effectively continue to work with our clients and is our ethical responsibility.

Strategies to Support Self-Care

As a current school counselor, my team is committed to engaging in self-care following a difficult situation (ex. protocol, cps call). We will take a mental health walk when needed and have encouraged the practice amongst our other staff members as well. I have also worked to set boundaries when it comes to work. I do not have my email or calendar on my phone, so when I leave for the day, I disengage and focus on my family. I also value setting goals and maintaining a consistent exercise routine, which I will work to uphold despite being busy with work, school, and my family.
