         <title>What are the functions of the Cell Wall?</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The Cell Wall has many functions.  It provides strength and structural support as well as helps to control what molecules enter and exit the cell.  The cell wall is flexible but strong, which helps to protect the cell against physical damage and gives the cell its shape.  The cell wall also helps to maintain the turgor pressure.  Turgor pressure is the pressure of the cell membrane pressing against the cell wall.  When the turgor pressure is lost, the plant begins to wilt.  Unlike animal cells, plant cells need lots of water inside the cell itself.  The cell wall holds the water in so that the cell does not burst.  </div>]]></description>

         <title>What is the structure of the Cell Wall?</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The Cell Wall is made up of cellulose and two groups of polysaccharides: pectins and crosslinking glycans.  Pectins give the cell wall the ability to resist compression, or keep its shape.  Crosslinking glycans increase the strength of the cellulose.  These three components form a network with structural proteins to form a wall.  The proteins help increase the mechanical strength of the cell wall.  Some parts of the proteins have enzymes, which help to initiate reactions within the wall.  Two examples of these reactions are fruit ripening and leaves falling.  The cell walls have channels inside them called plasmodesmatas, which allow nutrients and ions to come into the cell and waste to come out. </div>]]></description>

         <title>What is the structure of the Cell Wall (cont.)?</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The Cell Wall has two layers.  The first layer is called the primary cell walls.  These thin walls are formed when the cell is still in the process of growing. The second layer is called the secondary cell walls.  These are formed between the primary cell walls and the rest of the cell after the cells are fully grown.  Generally, when one talks about the cell wall of a plant, they are referring to the secondary cell walls.  There are also more substances in the secondary wall, making it thicker than the primary cell walls.  One such substance is lignin.  Lignin is the general name of a group of polymers of aromatic alcohols.  They give a lot of strength to the secondary wall and are really important for the structural support of plants . Lignins make the plant cell walls less vulnerable to attacks from fungi or bacteria.  </div>]]></description>

Most prokaryotic cells have a cell wall but only a few eukaryotic cells have the organelle.<br><br>4.  Robert Hooke was the first person to see the cell wall.  He discovered it in 1655.<br><br>5.  The cell wall creates a framework for the cell, which prevents it from over-expanding.  </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Sometimes, the plasmodesmatas (the channels in the cell wall) can allow too much water to flow out of the cell.  This causes the plant to wilt.  However, this is easily fixed when water returns to the system.  <br><br>If there is a change in pH, the cell wall can malfunction, causing the cell to burst.  This makes the cell lose rigidity and also makes it more susceptible to infections and attacks from bacteria.  This can also happen if there is a malfunction in the cell wall due to a mutation in the genetic material in the nucleus.  </div>]]></description>
