It's often used at parties, raves and nightclubs due to its desired effects. Most ecstasy pills are rarely 100% pure ecstasy, they're usually a mixture of other illicit drugs such as cocaine, caffeine, ketamine or opiods. Ecstasy pills have in various colours and designs and can either be taken orally or crushed up and snorted. Snorting ecstasy causes the effects to kick in sooner since it reaches the brain quicker.

Teens may think this drug makes parties more "fun" due to the energy and feeling of happiness or they might do it out of peer pressure or even boredom. Ecstasy can cause usually shy people to feel more outgoing which can often be appealing to teens. Ecstasy pills come in different colours, shapes and have cute patterns printed on them such as hearts, stars, Mickey Mouse etc. This may seen intriguing to teens as it looks like a small pill which is a lot less intimidating than injecting, smoking or snorting a substance.

This drug become popular during the Cold War period (1941-1991) because it was tested by the US Army of Strategic Services. They were searching for a drug which caused violent and aggressive behavior, ecstasy didn't fit this requirement. This caused the drugs popularity to deteriorate. During the 1960's and 1970's ecstasy was not classified as an illegal drug, however no drug company was producing it. It was sometimes used by psychiatrist on their patients to help enhance emotions and feelings of closeness. However further studies showed ecstasy caused brain damage, which was then named illegal in 1985. Ecstasy peaked during the 1990's and was most popular at raves and parties.
