A young, brown girl named Myop is exploring the woods behind her family's "sharecropper" cabin when she stumbles upon a heavily decomposed body. Although not explicitly stated, it is heavily presumed that the man was black and lynched. The gruesome act committed against this man was likely due to the color of his skin. His body being left to rot showing that the oppressors do not care about the unequal distribution of power and will exploit black people until it is no longer profitable to them. They are aware of the injustice for blacks in the law and consistently deny them the rights they deserve knowing that they will not be reprimanded. This one simple act is an example of a very corrupt system that impacts so many lives in so many different ways. Myop's childhood innocence was lost just from her accidentally finding the body of a man who had the same skin color as her. Her summer was "over" just as quickly as it had began. This story in itself has to do a lot of politics, power, and justice. The story takes place during the Jim Crow era where social and racial injustice was at its highest. Near the end of the story, after the encounter, Myop had noticed "the rotted remains of a noose". The text offers vivid, yet not explicitly stated contrast of power as Myob discover’s the rotting body of a black man who was lynched, which can be seen as a group of white people asserting their societal dominance and power.  over an innocent black man, who more than likely held no power due to his skin tone and class. The mob of white people that committed this crime probably didn’t view it as a crime because their skin tone offered them the freedom to do whatever they wish, something foreign to black people. In addition to the power contrast, the act against this black man emphasizes the lack of a fair justice system. Just by the way no one collected his body or prosecuted the perpetrators shows the disregard for black lives. The culmination of these ideas is Myob’s discovery of the decaying body, and the realization that her childhood is over. The freedom blacks had recently won, and were trying to peacefully live in could not be tolerated by those who saw blacks unfit for any kind of better life, and they seemed to take it upon themselves rid themselves of those problem using the cruelest of manners. The man who was laying under "layers of earth" for years unnoticed, unheard of, hidden and dead, why, because he was a sharecropper, who at the worst could have made a simple choice of giving a little less money to his landlord rather than see his family starve to death, or maybe all he did was be black, and the white man must have thought it was just pure unethical and ridiculous for such mistake like this to be walking freely, and breathing free air, so he should just rid the superior society of this burden and lynch this man.The total amount of consequences the white man faced for murder was zero because his skin color was a free pass, the dead man is well ,dead, but Myop who had no relation to either of those men probably earned herself a lifetime of nightmares.The once excited girl will now always imagine the "naked grin" of the dead man. She will never "bounce this way and that way" on strange path, for all she will remember is stepping on the "broken ridge between eyes and nose" of a dead man who had the same "dark brown hand" as her. She will remember the "threads of blue denim" on the dead man, every time she sees her father wear an overall, but worst of all she will remember the noose "spinning restlessly in the breeze".
