Apple pancake (Nina Patterson)

It's Sunday morning and everyone's still asleep but as soon as they're up, they'll ask for breakfast, so up you go and straight into the kitchen to see what's left in the fridge.
Well, there's not much milk left, and look, 3-4 apples you'd completely forgotten about. You might need to get creative. Ah, at least you have 4 eggs. Any butter? Not much, but might do. How about some brown sugar? Lucky you! There is a bit left in the jar. And look what you find in the kitchen drawer - that's an almost full packet of biscuits.
Time to get going! You wash the apples carefully, peel and slice them thinly, and fry them gently with half of the butter (50g) and some brown sugar (3-4 tbs). When they get golden brown, you spinkle them with a bit of cinnamon (1/2 teaspoon) and mix well. Then you leave the pan aside to cool.
In the meantime, you whisk the eggs with the rest of the sugar (3-4 tbs), the milk (250ml) and you carefully stir in the rest of the melted butter (50g) and 80g flour. Then you flavour with a bit of vanilla.
That being done, you crumble the biscuits on top of the apples in the pan and cover with the batter. Now all that's left is to put it in the pre-heated fan-assisted oven at 200 degrees Centigrade.
It takes about 20-30 minutes and your pancake is ready. As a finishing touch, sift some caster sugar on top.
And there it is! Ideal hot or cold, so no worries about how late they wake up! Now make yourself a cup of coffee and have a slice of pancake while you are waiting! They won't mind. There's enough to feed the whole family.

Chicken with rice (Alex Enchev)

One day, Alex decided to make dinner. He went to the store to buy the ingredients. When he got back, he left chicken, rice, onion, carrots, and spices in the kitchen, which are used in this dish. He put a pan on the stove and added oil. Once it started heating, he chopped the onion and carrots into squares, then added them to the pan to fry. He removed the skin from the chicken and placed it in the pan. Once it was fried, he added salt and pepper to make it tastier. He took the chicken and moved it to another plate while he put the rice in the pan and fried it because it would taste better that way. After both the chicken and rice were fried with the carrots and onions, everything was placed together and left to cook on the stove. Once it was cooked, he let it sit, but in the meantime, Alex set the table to make a good impression on the guests. When they arrived, everything was ready and served. Alex was very pleased as he got to see his friends.

Chia pudding with pumpkin (Gabriela Zhecheva, 12g class)

It was Saturday evening, and I was helping my mother with dinner- a creamy roasted pumpkin soup, one of my all-time favorite comfort foods. For the task my mom had asked my dad to go out and get a decently sized pumpkin. However, as usual, he got one that was just too big. Classic. This little mishap left my mom and I were wondering what to do with the leftovers. Luckily enough I quickly devised a way to use up the pumpkin so it wouldn’t go to waste. What that idea might be, you ask? Well, let me show you!

To start, I gathered my ingredients. Of course, there was the leftover pumpkin. Then upon looking through the fridge, I came across some milk that was to go bad in 2 days so better get that as well. The small bit of maple syrup at the back of the fridge also caught my eye, so I got that too. And to tie everything together I opened one of the cupboards and retrieved a packet of chia seeds.

Time to get to work!

I sliced up the pumpkin into pieces that were roughly the same size. I arranged them on a parchment-lined baking sheet and sprinkled some sugar on top before putting them in the oven to bake for 40 minutes. Once they were done I let them cool down for a bit. Meanwhile, I put two tablespoons of chia seeds in a lidded jar. Then I added the leftover milk, which was around half a cup, and a tad of maple syrup. After that, I put the lid on the jar and shook it vigorously for a minute. When I was satisfied, I popped the jar into the fridge to chill for an hour or two. After those hours passed, I pulled the jar out and stirred the chia pudding. Now it was time to combine everything. I got a tall glass and first put the pumpkin on the bottom before scooping up the chia pudding and dumping it on top. To preserve it till morning, I put them back in the fridge.

And there you have it - a healthy and simple breakfast!

It was a rainy autumn afternoon, perfect for something warm and sweet. I spotted some old apples - soft, bruised, almost too far gone. Perfect for a crumble.

I peeled and sliced them, tossing them into a baking dish with cinnamon. Hopefully, I’d find a little brown sugar. After some digging, I did- just enough! Then, I checked the oat jar. Almost empty, but I was absolutely lucky- just enough for the topping.

I mixed the oats with a little flour, more cinnamon, and the brown sugar. I melted some butter and drizzled it in, stirring until the mixture formed perfect little crumbles. I spread it over the apples and popped the dish into the oven.

As the rain tapped against the window, the warm scent filled the kitchen. Half an hour later, the crumble was golden and bubbling. The apples were soft, the topping crisp and buttery. A spoonful straight from the dish, maybe with cream on top- pure autumn comfort. Those old apples never tasted so good.

It was nine o’clock, already way past my usual dining time. I am used to having a prepared meal in the fridge as that is the practice in my home. However, to my surprise there was nothing already made and there were just a few ingredients to cook with. I explored what was in the cupboards and in the end, I took some rice, a can of tuna, sriracha sauce, mayo, cucumber and sesame seeds.

First, I washed the rice until the water became clear. It's an annoying process but it is important to achieve the best flavor. After the rice was washed, I put it in a pot with water and salt. I wasn’t really sure how much water was needed and I decided to search for information on the internet. There I learned a handy trick to estimate the amount. You just have to put your finger pointing downwards, on the top of the rice. After that fill the pot with water to your first knuckle. Then I was ready to put the rice on the stove to cook. It took around 20 minutes. After the rice was done, the meal was pretty much done, too.

I made a sauce from the mix of mayo and sriracha. It is one of my favorite condiments as the flavors of the two sauces balance each other really well and create a mildly spicy sauce. Next, I cut the cucumber into thin slices and I was ready for arranging. I put the rice in a bowl and over it I added the mixture of the tuna and the sauce. I garnished the meal with sesame seeds and the cucumber slices.

My nutritious meal was ready in just thirty minutes. It was quick and easy and also tasty.

Daniel’s hands shook as he poured 2 cups of heavy cream into a saucepan. The old clock on the wall ticked loudly. He had one hour to prepare the perfect crème brûlée or he would never leave this kitchen alive.

He split a vanilla bean, scraping out the seeds, and added them to the cream. He turned on the heat, watching as steam rose. Behind him, footsteps echoed in the hallway.

In a bowl, he whisked 5 egg yolks with half a cup of sugar until the mixture turned pale. The door creaked. They were watching.

Slowly, he poured the hot cream into the eggs, whisking fast to prevent curdling. He strained the custard, then carefully filled the ramekins. Moving quickly, he placed them in a baking dish, added hot water halfway up the sides, and slid them into the oven at 165°C.

Minutes passed like hours. Finally, he removed the custards, sprinkled sugar on top, and torched it until golden brown.

A shadow fell over him. A hand reached for a spoon. A slow bite. Then… a nod.

“You may go.”

Daniel exhaled. The crème brûlée had saved his life.

Banana bread (Marina Goegrieva 12G)

It was a Saturday morning, I slept in longer, because of the exhausting day I had yesterday. I was wondering what I could eat when I spotted some old, brown bananas in the fruit bowl. They were a little too mushy for me to eat as a snack so I decided to make something with them instead of throwing them away.

I have watched many videos with recipes for banana bread and I had a feeling these bananas were just perfect for this. So, I got to work.

I peeled off the bananas and mashed them up very well in a bowl. Then, I started putting ingredients that I, luckily, had - flour, sugar, eggs, baking soda, and a pinch of salt. I also had some chocolate chips left. Why not put them in, too? I’d love some extra sweetness.

I mixed everything together, making sure all the ingredients were well-combined.

I poured the batter into a greased loaf pan and put it into the oven at 180°C. I was getting annoyed by the waiting - I was very hungry! But it was all worth it. The smell from the oven whetted my appetite.

About an hour later, I pulled it out of the oven, golden brown on top, and I couldn’t resist cutting a slice while it was still warm. It was perfect! The taste was rich and the texture was amazing.

I felt very proud because I knew those old bananas, normally destined for the compost bin, had not been wasted and used for something so delicious!

Outside, snow was falling. I barely got out of my warm bed with a rumbling stomach and headed to the kitchen in search of something tasty for breakfast. There was nothing left since it was Friday, except for a bit of stale bread and a lump of butter. I decided I could make a crispy, not so healthy granola with fresh milk.

I cut two slices of bread into very small cubes, melted the butter, and poured it over the bread cubes so they could soak it up. It lacked sweetness and a festive aroma, so I added a bit of sugar and cinnamon to the mix. After the bread absorbed all the wonderful flavors of cinnamon and butter, I placed it in my favorite - the air fryer - for 10 minutes.

When the bread cubes turned golden and crispy, I added them to the milk. In just 15 minutes, I had a delicious, filling, and festive breakfast. Stale bread truly works wonders!

I really like pasta, but I don’t like buying products for it. The reason for this is that I usually make pasta only once a week and I make it only for myself, so it’s a small portion. Every time I make this pasta there are 3 ingredients that are obligatory - tomato, garlic and butter. Everything else I add is what I find in the fridge. Sometimes it’s ham, carrots, cheese or sausage. Sometimes I add turmeric, because it gives the pasta an interesting flavour and cool colour. I really like this recipe because it’s delicious, fast, easy and I don’t waste food.

Here is a photo (it doesn’t look very good, but I promise it’s delicious!)

It's Sunday evening and my mum and I are in the kitchen, looking for something to make for dinner. We don't want to waste any food, so we check what's left in the fridge. There's a small piece of cheese, a bit of cooked spinach from lunch and half a red pepper that needs to be used soon. We also have one egg and a little milk. In the cupboard, we find some flour and baking powder. We love baking together, so we get started right away.

First, we chop the red pepper into tiny pieces and mix it with the spinach. Then, we grate the cheese and add it to the bowl. My mum lets me break the egg into another bowl and I whisk it with a little milk. We slowly add flour and baking powder to make a thick batter. I mix everything together while my mum greases the muffin tray.

We spoon the batter into the muffin cups, making sure each one is full. Then, we put them into the oven at 180°C. As they bake, the kitchen fills with a delicious smell. After 20 minutes, they are golden brown and ready to eat. We let them cool for a few minutes before tasting them.

A great way to use up leftovers and make something delicious!

It was December 23rd—Mom's birthday. I had prepared so many surprises for her today. She had always made my celebrations special, so when I grew up, I decided it was my duty to make her happy on her special occasions.

I woke her up with a bouquet of flowers—her favorite pink tulips. Mom took care of many flowers and I think she didn’t even have a favorite because each one brought her joy.

Then, I gave her a card with a poem I had written just for her. It was quite an emotional moment for her.

However, while wrapping her present, I suddenly realized I had forgotten to make her a cake, and in just a few hours, the guests would be arriving. I panicked for a moment, but then I decided to check what we already had at home. Instead of rushing to the store, I was determined to make do with whatever I could find in the kitchen.

I found a pack of leftover biscuits from a previous dessert, some butter in the fridge and half a container of cream cheese. There was also a small carton of heavy cream that needed to be used soon and some powdered sugar in the cupboard. For the topping, I spotted an open jar of homemade jam. It was perfect—I was going to make Mom’s favorite cheesecake using only what we had!

First, I took a bowl and crushed 220 grams of leftover biscuits. While doing that, I melted 150 grams of butter. After preparing the baking tin with parchment paper, I mixed the biscuits with the butter and let the cheesecake base set in the fridge for about 30 minutes.

Then, I whipped 200 grams of leftover heavy cream with 300 grams of cream cheese and 100 grams of powdered sugar.

I spread the cream over the base and let it set in the fridge for four hours.

Just before the guests arrived and I served my masterpiece, I added homemade jam on top for decoration.

Everyone loved it, but the happiest of all was Mom. It felt even more special knowing that I had created something wonderful without wasting any food. I love seeing her smile and feel happy.

It was a chilly evening and I was in the kitchen, lооking for something special to prеpare. I had а few croissants left over from breakfast and I didn’t want them tо go to waste. Аs I scanned my recipe collection, my еyes landed on a croissant bread sauce, perfect for a comforting meal.

I gаthered my ingredients which were as follows: butter, onion, whole milk, ground cloves, and the croissants. The kitchеn was smelling very good and inviting while I was melting the butter in a pаn over low heat. I sliced the onion and tossed it in, covering the pan and lеtting it soften until it turned sweet.

Next, I poured in the milk аnd sprinkled in a pinch of ground cloves. Their warm spice was blеnding with the buttery onion aroma. Аfter 15 minutes it was time to аdd the croissants. Thеy soaked up the creamy liquid almost instantly, turning it into a soft, rich mixture.

Finally, I spооned it onto the plаtе while аdding a small knob of butter on top, letting it melt into the sauce. I also аdded а bit of black pepper and then it was ready. The first tаste was amazing, slightly sweet from the croissаnts, with а bit of spice from the cloves.

A simple recipe, yet full of warmth and cоmfort. Perfect for a cozy evening mеаl.

Vegetable rice pancake

One day I was hungry. I opened the fridge, hoping to find something good, but I only saw a small bowl of leftover rice, half a carrot, some spinach leaves, and a tiny piece of cheese. Not much, but I didn’t want to throw food away. I had to be creative!

I thought for a moment and decided to make a simple vegetable rice pancake.

I took a bowl and mixed the rice with the grated carrot and chopped spinach. I cracked an egg into the bowl and stirred it all together. It needed something extra, so I added some flour and grated cheese. A little salt, some pepper, and dried herbs made it taste even better.

Now, it was time to cook. I heated a little oil in a pan and put spoonfuls of the mixture into it, pressing each one down a little. The kitchen soon smelled warm and nice. After a few minutes, I flipped them over and saw they had turned golden brown.

Finally, I put them on a plate and took a bite. Crispy on the outside, soft and tasty inside—just right! I ate them with some yogurt and ketchup on the side.

As I sat down to eat, I felt happy. I had turned a few simple leftovers into a yummy meal, and nothing was wasted. A small effort, but a great way to save food!

What’s your food saver story?

 Creme caramel with easter bread

It was a calm beautiful spring day. It was warm outside, the sun was shining and the birds were singing. I was on vacation because it was Easter two days ago and I was enjoying my days off.

I decided to go to the kitchen to see what to eat because I was already very hungry. I saw that from Easter we had a lot of eggs left over that we hadn't boiled and a lot of Easter bread that no one was eating anymore because we were tired of eating it.

I decided that we couldn't throw away so much food and I thought that I could make crème caramel with Easter bread.

I started looking for a recipe and it turned out that I only needed milk, which we had anyway and no one used, Easter bread, eggs, sugar and vanilla. I put all the products on the table and started preparing it. I caramelized some sugar in a small saucepan and then poured it into the bottom of a large ceramic pan. I cut the bread into slices and arranged it on top of the caramel. Then I took a separate bowl and beat the eggs, adding the vanilla sugar and milk.

After mixing everything, I poured the mixture into the mold and let it absorb everything for 15 minutes. The last thing I had to do was put the dessert in the oven for 20 minutes at 160 degrees.

After the it was ready, it was best to let it cool and then share it with family and friends. This dessert proved to be a great way to use up leftover food from the holidays and make something delicious.

It was a dull cold night. Of those in which you want to stay warm at home and watch movies. On nights like this I like to make pasta with pesto. So I got the necessary ingredients out of the cupboard. Macaroni, cheese and pesto. I always have macaroni and cheese at home, so I had to just check if I had any leftover pesto.

After everything was found, I first filled a small pot with water to boil. Then I put the macaroni to the boil for about 15 minutes. Meanwhile, I added a spoonful of salt and oil to make the macaroni fatter. When they were ready, I put them in a bowl and added the pesto and cheese. I took my pasta and enjoyed it with a good movie.

I always make this dinner when when I'm lazy or have nothing to eat because usually I have all the ingredients.

It was Friday evening, and I was finally home after a long week. I sat on the couch for a moment, but soon I felt hungry. It was time to make dinner! I went to the kitchen and opened the fridge to see what I could use.

Well, there was some cooked pasta from last night and a piece of roast chicken from two days ago. Ah, and look—half a bell pepper and a little spinach that didn’t look very fresh. Not much, but maybe I could make something tasty. At least I had some cheese!

I started cooking. I chopped the onion (1/2) and garlic (1 clove) and cooked them in a little olive oil (1 tbsp). When they smelled nice, I added the bell pepper and spinach. I mixed everything for a few minutes until soft, then took the pan off the heat.

In a bowl, I mixed 1 egg with 1/2 cup of milk, a little salt and pepper, and some oregano (1/2 tsp). This would make the dish creamy and delicious.

Then, I took a baking dish and put in the leftover pasta and shredded chicken (1 cup). I added the cooked vegetables and mixed everything together. After that, I sprinkled some grated cheese (1/2 cup) on top.

That was it! I put the dish in the preheated oven at 180°C and waited for about 20 minutes. While it baked, I made a cup of tea and sat down. The kitchen smelled amazing!

When the timer rang, I took the dish out of the oven. The cheese was golden and bubbling. I took a fork and had a bite.

Delicious! And the best part? I didn’t waste any food. It was a perfect dinner from just a few leftovers!

One evening, after a long day at school , I found myself standing in front of the open fridge, asking "What’s for dinner?" But this time, instead of grabbing takeout, I decided to use what was left behind.

I took a deep breath and began my investigation through the fridge. The first thing that caught my eye was a bowl of rice from last night’s dinner. "Perfect," I thought. Rice is a solid foundation.

Next, a small bowl of roasted vegetables—carrots, peppers, and zucchini. I smiled; this was already coming together. Then I grabbed a few eggs from the carton, figuring they'd add a nice finishing touch. But the real jackpot came when I spotted a block of cheese. As a cheese lover I was so happy.

Now that I had my base ingredients, I got to work. I started by reheating the rice in a pan with a bit of oil. I chopped up the leftover veggies into bite-sized pieces. I tossed them in with the rice, giving everything a good stir. The kitchen smelled like home.

But it wasn’t quite ready yet. I cracked the eggs into a bowl and poured them over the rice and veggies. I stirred, watching the eggs cook into soft, golden ribbons. I grated the cheese over the top, letting it melt into the mixture.

I was proud of my work—something beautiful made from the remnants of the past few meals.

I sat down with my creation, enjoying every piece of it. It wasn’t just a meal; it was a reminder of how a little creativity and some time spent in the kitchen could turn simple leftovers into something special.

On the windy autumn morning of October 12th, my early duties were unhindered, as usual, and went according to plan. The day before two fine gentlemen had arrived at the manor with the intention of staying for a good amount of time, presumably several weeks, for my master's hospitality knows no bounds. I found the overall demeanour and character of the guests rather queer, yet my personal opinion on this topic is quite irrelevant.

First and foremost, at precisely 6:45, I unlocked the kitchen door and entered, sagaciously gathering all of the essential ingredients from the pantry beforehand; to my dismay, however, the majority of our provisions had fallen victim to vermin during the night! Nevertheless, what little I could salvage proved more than sufficient for a nourishing and splendid breakfast.

I began the cooking process with lighting the stove and allowing it to heat well. Afterwards, at 7 o'clock, I poured a quart of milk into a steel saucepan. While the milk warmed, I devoted myself to laying the table in the dining hall. When the milk reached its appropriate temperature, I proceeded with adding 8 ounces of oats, which I stirred until the dish was ready at 7:20. In the meantime I prepared the tea - a most exquisite bouquet from Ceylon - and placed it upon the table in the dining hall. I then translocated the steaming porridge into a sterling silver pot, adding a dash of butter alongside a pinch of salt for flavour.

Once everything was prepared, I entered

the dining hall where, to my pleasure, the residents had already taken their seats. One of them instantly inquired as to the morning's fare - whether filet mignon or consommé might be expected. To this, I responded proudly:

"Oatmeal, sir!"

Honey Cookies (Medenki)(Ivan Kolev 12g)

I did not intend on baking today, however when I stepped into the kitchen I started thinking. With the ingredients I had left, what could I make? I looked inside the cupboard and found a bit of honey, sugar, and a small piece of butter. Inside the fridge, there was one egg and in the pantry there was a bit of flour and some cinnamon. It wasn’t much, but it was enough. That’s when I decided—Honey Cookies (Medenki)!

To start the process I melted the butter (50g) in a little pan. When it had melted, I mixed in the honey (3 tbsp), and sugar (3 tbsp) stirring until everything blended. The smell was already amazing! I cracked the egg in another bowl then slowly added it to the mixture. After that I gradually added the flour (200g), baking soda (½ tsp), and cinnamon (1 tsp). I mixed the dough with my hands until it was soft and smooth.

It was now time to mould the cookies. I took a handful of dough and rolled them into small spheres. After that, I arranged them on a baking tray that was covered with parchment paper. The oven was already hot, 180°C was great. The kitchen smelled like warm spices while the medenki rested in the oven for 12 to 15 minutes. I couldn’t wait to try them!

I let out the soothing scent of the cookies, placed them in the oven until they became golden brown. I then let them cool for a couple of minutes before indulging in them.

Finally, it was time for the best part—tasting! I took a bite while they were still a little warm. The outside was slightly crispy, and the inside was soft and full of sweet honey flavor. They were perfect with a cup of tea! The best part? These cookies stay fresh for days, so I knew there would be enough for everyone to try. But honestly, I wasn’t sure they would last that long!

It was a Saturday evening at the begining of August and it was my day off from work. I had nothing else to do as it was too hot to go to the beach and I had just finished my book.

I went to the kitchen to make myself some coffee and spotted some apricots that were about to go bad. They were already too soft to eat and my mother was probably going to throw hem away soon so I decided to prepare something with them.

I remembered a pie that my aunt used to make me before. An apricot pie. So I washed my hands and started preparing the pie. We already had all the ingredients I needed so there was no need to go to the store.

Firstly, I got a bowl and mixed 3 eggs with a cup of sugar until it dissolved completely. Then to this egg mixture I added 2 tablespoons of rum (you can skip this step if you don't have any or if it's not to your preference), 1 table spoon of oil, 1 cup of flour and a tea spoon of baking powder. I mixed everything with a mixer until a smooth and a thick cake mixture was obtained. My mixer didn't have a lid to protect me so I got covered in mixture. I then cleaned myself and put baking paper in the pan where I was going to bake my pie. It was a pit tricky bending the baking paper as it is very flexible and slippery but my mom told me a little hack to help me. She told me to wet a bit the paper and this way it is easier to get it to stay in the corners and sides of the pan.

I then poured the mixture into the pan and arranged the half-cut apricots on top, but had forgotten to preheat the oven. I got so frustrated because I was already starving but there was no way around it. I turned on the oven at 180 degrees and sat down to finish my coffee and look at the upcoming shows on Netflix.

Fifteen minutes later I got up and put the pie into the oven. I was very impatient and checked it every 5 minutes but I just couldn't wait anymore. After 25 seemingly endless minutes the pie had finally acquired the needed golden cover. I pulled it out and it filled the kitchen with an amazing smell. I even got the approval of my grandmother, which is a great accomplishment.

I had to put it in the fridge for a while because it is served chilled but after 10 minutes I pulled it out, cut it in pieces, sprinkled some castor sugar on top and finally tasted it. I enjoyed every bite of that amazing dessert! My mom even ate two pieces because she loved it so much. I also felt an overwhelming feeling of satisfaction because I had saved some food that was bound to be thrown away and had prepared something delicious. What an amazing day!
