When one cannot express his feelings properly and accurately during a conversation using the lexic of his culture, it's normal to use the imagetic carachteristic of our minds to say what we want through the sense granted to words. Lopes named it as "Salto da imaginação criadora", when Borba's going to denominate it "Nomeação subjetiva". Also, the bilingual dictionaries (English-Portuguese) usually only paraphrase the idiomatic expression instead of giving a context or a direct equivalent. Considering that idiomatic expressions are used in a daily basis, in dialogues and written pieces. However, for new learners it is hard to have the opportunity to keep in touch in any way with the form that natives express their feelings. For example: it's a piece of cake, if a person that's learning English hear this expression for the first time they probably will be confused as is not a literal statement, the idea of the sentence would be represented in Portuguese as "é mamão com açúcar". An idiomatic expression is used to express a feeling or opinion, but saying in a creative way, by conotative meaning. It's usual in other languages, natives speakers normally use, so it's important to study to understand how they express themselves and the meaning, not being a naive speaker and being successful when you try to communicate.
