         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Battle of Britain</strong>, during WWII the successful defense of Great Britain against unremitting and destructive air raids conducted by Germany from July through September 1940, after the fall of France. Victory for the Luftwaffe in the air battle would have exposed Great Britain to invasion by the German army, which was then in control of the ports of France only a few miles away across the English Channel In the event, the battle was won by the Royal Air Force (RAF), whose victory not only blocked the possibility of invasion but also created the conditions for Great Britain’s survival, for the extension of the war, and for the eventual defeat of Nazi Germany.</div>]]></description>
