Critical Thinking

My host teacher, Jon Greenberg, focused on teaching his students rhetoric and critical thinking in class.

This skill contributed to Jon's push to include all students in the class and give students the tools they need to fight oppression.

What I love the most about critical thinking, which is arguably the most frustrating part of this skill, is that there are no "right or wrong" answers. With this in mind, it's important to develop lessons from an unbiased perspective and act as the "devil's advocate" with multiple perspectives.

Common language:
Having a classroom-wide "common language" is a tool I'll use with my future students as a method for creating a culturally responsive classroom.

This includes: peace signs for responses, snaps for agreement, rubbing hands together for support and raising your hand for new responses.

Pronouns: I want to make an effort to know and use each students' preferred pronouns in my classroom. This increases a student's trust with their teacher and also makes them feel welcome.

Know your students: I witnessed some heated situations between classmates, some between students with no-contact contracts. I'll definitely plan my seating arrangements based on positive and negative observed student interactions.

Jon, a SU MIT graduate, incorporates social justice in his classroom through various videos and articles that portray diverse experiences. Bringing in external sources is crucial towards building an inclusive classroom culture without tokenizing your students of color.

Jon taught me that exit tickets are crucial when you close a lesson. These are key for evaluating if your students have actually learned anything from your lesson. My last lesson with Jon ended on a slightly awkward note, but I could have easily fixed that with an exit ticket.
