Jonah Livelli- man vs. society because Liesel and Rudy are conflicted that society has taken their fathers away and there is nothing they can do about it. The symbol for this conflict is the accordion. It represents comfort for Liesel because Hans played for her when she had nightmares before he left.

I can connect to the conflict in Part Eight because if I was in the situation were Ruby was about to be left all alone with no protection because if one of my parents went to war I don't know what I would do alone. In the text it says, " On Friday, as statement arrived to say that Hans Hubermann was to be drafted into the German army. A member of the party would be happy to play a role in the war effort, it concluded. If he wasn't,there certainly be consequences." ( Zusak, 281) This explains that during this time of the book there had to be a decision made instantly because Hans Hubermann didn't have much time.

When their fathers got drafted they are starting to realize what war is like and suffering it can cause, "The cruelty of fate, however, did not allow Rudy Steiner to enter the kitchen at the opportune moment,"(Part 8 , 277). They're conflicted with society because they feel powerless against it. Liesel had a strong bond with her father, so having him ripped away from her due to the societal conflict. Their bond grew when she began to have nightmares, and Hans came in to comfort her. "Possibly the only good to come out of these nightmares was that it brought Hans Hubermann, her new papa, into the room, to soothe her, to love her. He came every night and sat with her" (Suzak 36). Obviously in that time, especially since it's Nazi Germany, to develop any type of hatred towards Hitler could lead to your certain death. However Rudy's realization that he hated the fuhrer was a great example of man vs conflict, as "Rudy stopped. “Because I want to kill him.” He even turned on the spot, to the rest of the world. “Did you hear
that, you bastards?” he shouted. “I want to kill the Führer!” This shows a great man verses society conflict as Rudy's views are not the same of many of the Germans views.

I feel like this is because many elements of society and the government interfere with the lives of Liesel and Rudy as well as everyone else. In Part 8, the narrator mentions: "It was a sign of the German army’s growing desperation. They were losing in Russia.
Their cities were being bombed. More people were needed, as were ways of attaining them, and in most cases, the worst possible jobs would be given to the worst possible people" This is a good example of societal conflict because the government is looking to go into people lives and put their well being at risk.

Rudy would have gone away to school. And maybe, he would have lived." (Zuzak 277). Through this quote, we know that Rudy could have survived, but we know he dies anyway, which foreshadows Part 10 and the epilogue. This also helps the reader understand that something is going to happen to Himmel street, because Rudy dies because he didn't go to school, which hints even more towards what happens in the end.

In the first chapter of Part Eight, soldiers approached Rudy's family with the intention of sending Rudy to a school for "elite... German citizens" (Zusak 276). This development in the plot drastically shaped the ending of the book, as Rudy decided not to go. His mother protested against having them take Rudy, saying "Not my boy." (Zusak 275); and as Rudy did not like the Fuhrer as evidenced when Liesel stated he was "Killing the Fuhrer" (Zusak 289) and his reaction was "happy," he did not go: "Rudy Steiner wasn't going anywhere." (Zusak 277). This choice will lead to his death when Himmel Street is bombed, and as death says, "If he'd intervened, it might've changed everything." and the fact that his death could have been avoided was hinted with death's statement that he "[maybe] would have lived."
