I am like the quiet, listening to others. 

I am water, moving and flowing adapting to the ever changing weather conditions of life. 

I am like headphones, listening in on what is important. 

I am a bird, wanting to often take flight. 

I am a fish jumping in and out of the lake in search of the next tasty meal.

I am the morning, waking early, awake and ready.

I am more of a question mark than an exclamation.

I am like a chameleon, shape shifting, changing colors more often than I wish.

I am like a molten lava cake. Strong on the outside, but cut me and I melt. 

I am purple and green and blue. It just depends on the day. 

I am, I am, I am. 

I am like a fall day, not too hot, not too cold, just in the middle. I am not too windy or too dry, not too still or too damp just in the middle. I am yellow and green not on either side of the rainbow. I am like the goldilocks of people, I don't like spicy food, and I do not like tastelessness. I’m not a trombone, playing so low and I am not like a violin or flute playing too high. I am more like a trumpet, just in the middle. I am not part of the jedi or the sith. I don’t prefer black or white, I just like the middle.  

My bedhead hair is messy 

And fading grey, 

Even as I try to keep it brown.

My skin has wrinkles and lines,

Dark marks and lumps, 

Even as I try to stay out 

Of the sun.

My eyes are wide open,

Trying to see the world as it is,

even when when I want 

To close them to the pain 

I can’t help but see.

Like Popeye, 

I yam what I yam, 

Aging in place, 

Trying to see the humor

In a moment in history

That is often anything

But funny.

That’s the question I ask all day

What am I

Am I a bird, free in the sky

Am I a dog, locked in a cage

Am I the sun, shining warm rays

What am I

Am I like the mountains, tall and cold

Am I like a sun-washed valley, warm and welcoming

Or am I simply in between

Flat ground

Normal

What am I

I wonder

What am I

But now I know the answer

What am I?

I am me.
Simply me.
