Oloosie~ Helping others

By helping others you find something useful, the most difficult and important things we need to do usually requires help to do them.

I was the youngest in my family and my Anaana (mother) was an elder who made sure my siblings and myself was taught to know Helping others is one of the most important ways of life. No matter who the other person is “if you see someone in need of help, you help them” ikajuqatariaqatugut. She never really explained why we have to help others but she use to remind us most of the time Inuuqatittini ikajuqatariaqatugut (we have to help others when they are in need) and she use to say don’t expect anything in return like if the person we helped try to pay us in cash we don’t take it.

Dorothy

Advice I’ve learn from an elder, innunguinniq. an elder told me before never spoil a child too much, and never yell and shouted to your child, and explain to your child calmly. When the parents spoil their child growing up the child starts to think they will get whatever they want, even when they grow up as an adult, and they think it will be okay to treat others like that. This advice is useful and unforgettable, to never spoil a child too much.

Another advice we were always told to never fight back to other people unless it is to fight the goo fight or to protect himself from danger. qanuiliutaalugaluaruvii akkigiaqatatailiit.

Do you have a specific elder that you often turn to?

My mother.

How do you feel after speaking to an elder? When a child was spoiled growing up I now see that this is very important as it can be passed down to generations and it becomes a part of their lives.

She would also tell me not to (akkigianniq) don’t hit back Even if someone is not being nice or not being good to me don’t need pay back.
