How do these photographs portray us as a society?

During the industrial revolution all people of power in Europe wanted to focus on was making things new and better. In fact the slogan of the industrial revolution was “Make it new” by Ezra Pound. For the first time ever, factories pumped out so much stuff extra labor forces were needed.

Adults of the lower class, for the most part worked full time in these factories, but it wasn’t enough, so children were brought in, as seen in photo one. Only the lucky ones, who were wealthy, got to go to school, as seen in photo three. The result of this for many countries, is what we are dealing with today, similar to photo one, many children today still work in factories in non westernized and poverty stricken places. The forced labour of children is still alive, even if no longer in European, or westernized countires.

These three photograph all contain children, in which are all depicted in different ways that reflect us as a society. The first is about caucasian children who work in poor conditions. The second, of a very sorrowful child of colour fishing through an endless sea of trash, alone. The third, looks to be a school photograph of all caucasian people, although it could also be an orphanage.

I say this is a school photo because of the matching uniforms and the presence of two adults which we can assume are teachers. It is important to note that the first two photos appear to be during the time of the industrial revolution and that the second photo look present.

All of the waste from all of these “new and better things” have ended up in these impoverished countries, as seen in photo two. The lasting impact of the industrial revolution is awful when we consider the unethical ways that it failed to plan for the future, in terms of the damage it is doing to mother earth. The child in photo two represents where the bulk of all of the industrial revolution’s waste ends up, in the most impoverished, racially marginalized places on earth, where it looks like the industrial revolution never ended.

Word Count: 358

When I first saw him, it was a miserable night. Rain pounded down and lightning shook the ground. At first, I thought I was seeing things in the dark as one does, but then the lightning confirmed my sights. He was gorilla-like in appearance. He had a vaguely humanoid look and at times walked upright in a manly manner. He was covered in thick black fur all over except for his bare chest and a few huge slash marks across his back. His bald spots revealed his almost scaly skin. His gaping mouth bared huge teeth as saliva dripped everywhere. But the most telling feature was that he had to be over 100 feet tall.

He scaled the buildings like a spider and picked up people like he was playing with toys. He plucked trees from the ground and used them as toothpicks, picking the arms and legs out of his teeth. Textile factories imploded as he strode through the streets.

But, then he stopped and stared straight at me. He opened his mouth and roared the roar of all roars. He beat his chest and started his sprint toward me. I was frozen in fear. It was like I was paralyzed. The tap on my back brought me back and I started running, weaving through the stone side streets trying to find a place to hide.

He plucked the person up from behind me and slowed down as I heard the “CRUNCH”. It gave me a few seconds to hide behind a big pile of garbage. As I sat, my scent coved by the smell of trash, I thought about what I felt.

He terrified me, just like how going to work terrified me, but this was a different fear. This was bone-shaking fear.

This is a short Prose about fear and monsters during the time of the industrial revolution. At the start of the story, I try to use one of the gothic terms “Desolate environments” to set the theme for the Prose. I tried to make the reader feel that they were in a horror movie. I was trying to show how the industrial revolution wasn’t a good time for those who had to work for someone. The monster I based my story on was King Kong, I described him in the start and used the gothic term “Grotesque elements” where I used words to put the picture of a man-eating battle scared gorilla into the reader's mind. This reflects the grotesque ethics of the industrial revolution. The final gothic element I used was “The horrible” where I said, “He plucked the person up from behind me and slowed down as I heard the “CRUNCH”, therefore putting a horrible picture in the reader's mind. In this story, King Kong represents all the deaths that the factories and machines caused and the fear that people faced having to go to work everyday knowing it could be their last.

This is a monologue about a father who has to tell his family that he can’t be with them at Christmas. In this monologue, I try to show the reader how unfair and unethical the industrial revolution was. One way I did this was by using literary devices to show the father's emotions. The first literary device I used was hyperbole, I exaggerated the amount of work that the father did by saying “All I have been doing, all my life is work.” The second literary device I used was the rule of three. I used this device three times in my writing because its repetition really gets the point across. I used them in the following ways, firstly “I worked at school, I worked at home, and now I work at a factory,” secondly, “No, I cannot, I shall not, I will not,” finally, “No food, no presents, and worst of all, no me.” The final literary device that I used is a metaphor. I used a metaphor in these instances to amplify the effect of the phrase, “It will break her.” and “I thought about the sadness that would be in her eyes.” These are metaphors because in the first it can’t literally break her, and in the second sadness can’t really be in her eyes.
