So far, I've mostly done walks with my students. I used the school yard in collaboration with other teachers when there is some kind of a project day at school.
I have to admit that I did not use it on my own because I thought it would not be much different than in the classroom since I teach English and Computer Science. But now when I think about it, I can see our school yard as a good place for movement games with my students.

I sometimes take my classes to school yard. They sit in groups of 5-6 and sometimes do some activities from their books, workbooks or readers. They can discuss things, explain their answers to each other and consult mobile phones and me when they have questions. I walk around all the teams and ask questions or answer their questions, generally I try to make them find the answer themselves, asking questions. Sometimes we play physcial games, which they run, move, follow instructions, enjoy being outside.

Recently I used it for Easter Egg Hunt. I was delighted because it turned partly into biology lesson and studenets were showing each other what bugs and stuff they came across. They were warned to watch out when about fragile plants in the garden and they were also tasked to collect litter that got stuck in the bushes. PE aspect of the hunt does not need special emphasis here. My students enjoyed it. And we will do it again.

I used the yard of my school for educational purposes with 5th grade students. Students measured the length and width of a tennis and football field. They calculated the area of the school tennis and football court and compared the obtained result with the actual football and tennis court. Our school yard was just and empty space with nothing for the children to play. So one year we had a project about making a proposal to the local authorities about this specific yard. The children were thrilled and they were measuring, counting, designing and questioning about what is they need in a school yard. As you can imagine we had to spend a lot of time outside and the results of that project were astonishing. Two yearls later the municipality constructed a convntional playground, nothing like the ideas that children came up with. But still it was a big improvement.

The school playground is not very representative, but I try to make the most of it, so I planted plant seeds and smaller seedlings with first graders and we learned about seeds, seedlings, planting, the necessary ingredients for proper plant growth and development. In times of great heat, I try to do language lessons with the students in the shade and start with a conversation, then tell a review of the story, followed by a return to the classroom for writing in a notebook.

What we enjoy the most is our small garden. Pupils have learned, among other things, the germination cycle by doing. We also use the schoolyard for phisycal educationactivities, for Easter Eggs hunting, drawing, painting, reharshall drama, storytelling...lots of different activities.
Other types of spaces for learning outside the classroom that exist in the school are the gym, that we also use for the same purposes than the schoolyard in rainy days and also a cooking workshop that we use once a term to learn and prepare healthy food.
The library is another part of the school that we use as learning space.

I have not done something outside my classroom, but each year, a colleague organizes with her group a "treasure hunt" as Dr. Barfod suggests. Students go around the classrooms and some parts of the school, collecting clues, the returning to the the teacher, just to have some other lue to be found. In my school it is very common to have moments of learning outside the classroom.

In addition to celebrating festive days – Music Day, Poetry Day, Children's Day, Carnival, Halloween, … - the school yard also serves to have various curricular subjects activities. I usually do Peddy Paper at the end of each quarter, with competition between classes about a particular book that was read and analyzed in the classroom. These activities are games where students have to go around the school (Library, Theater room, Music room, Gym, Vegetable garden, Gardens, Soccer fields, Student and Teacher lounge) responding to various challenges (singing, reading , writing, drawing, imitating, declaiming, dancing, dramatizing) in a given space of time. There is always a prize for the winning group: a book according to the age group of the students.

This type of activity requires coordination between the different teachers of the different classes, but it is always fun, fruitful and encourages reading.

At our school we are lucky enough to have a space for the students to plant their own vegetable which they take care of and watch grow. I have also prepared scavenger hunts in the school yard. We are lucky to have a great school yard. We do not make the most of it though. Teachers use it for PE lessons, scavanger hunts, reading corners, planting trees and taking care of various plants and even break time. We have recently bought some sitting pads to be used for outdoor lessons. Next week we are organizing an outdoor day for all students. Hope it will be a success for both teachers and kids. That could be a good starting point for bringing teaching out of doors in our school. We also organize concerts for parents outdoors.

In most schools, the courtyard is a safe, spacious, convenient place for learning activities. I intent to use it for activities concerning maths, preparing carefully in advance a part of it in order both my students and I can work as being scheduled, while the rest of the school will enjoy a normal school life.

Even if there are is enough free, safe and suitable space for outdoor activities in our courtyard (running water, soil, flora and fauna, sport equipment, soccer field, basketball and volleyball courts, outdoor covered areas), my planning is oriented towards its use while the rest or a part of the school will be away in other activities (excursions, educational visits,…).

The main difficulty which arises when practicing outdoor activities is to incorporate this learning process in the official curriculum in an efficient and effective way. Additionally, both planning and deploying outdoor activities are time- consuming which is discouraging for the higher school levels.

We go out with preschoolers. In the morning, the children are given a clue as to what to do. I allow children to mention and offer tasks themselves. When we go out, we first do a daily study of the weather, the season. Then let's get to the lessons. The children outside are inspired and happy to work.

Looking, listening and contemplating the school, going out to discover the environments outside the classroom, patios, playgrounds, trees and other corners full of life is a good start to give wings to your imagination and carry out your first educational adventures!
The work dynamics, proposed in the different etwinning projects, in which the school was involved, are examples of activities in contexts outside the classroom, privileging the schoolyard and surrounding area.
Take advantage of the space outside the classroom to apply the curricular contents of measures of length, perimeters and areas. In practice, in natural contexts, there is greater motivation and involvement in learning. Learn to do by doing!

I use our school garden a lot with my preschoolers and we experience things... learning English: we found out that sand can be very hard, but if one pours water on it, it softens and you can dig easily. By contrast, if you poor water on concrete, it still remains very hard. I never tought outside before - I had some activities, mainly for various projects, but my egular curriculum waas never taken outside classroom. When I think about it - I CAN use many outdoor spaces: school yard. river nearby school, park, playground near school... any space can be related to some literature or language topic so I have a great advantage in that.

We used our school garden for an activity we had to do in our eTwinning project. We made compost. We observed for a month and saw that we were successful when we opened our compost buckets to pour under the flowers in our school garden. We have also drawn the attention of other students and teachers.
