Always keep in touch with the applicant after the interview, regardless of the expected outcome. Its good practice to always keep the applicants informed and up to date on any information regarding the position they have applied for and especially the timeline surrounding the post interview process.
Personally, after an interview, I always make sure to contact all the applicants within 48 hours of the first interview for a brief update, especially if you are interviewing multiple candidates and then again in another 48 hours, just they are aware of the situation and don't feel abandoned by the process. After that, when a decision has been made I call all the applicants to inform them of the decision. After interviews and checks have taken place, I try not to leave it for more than 2 weeks post interview regarding the decision.
With online applicants who don't make to interview stage, i will send out emails within a week of closure on the job listing.

I believe that it is a very good practice to ensure that you keep the applicants informed of the process. Once you have gone thru all the CV's and the close off date has passed. Two days later and a short list has been made. I would contact the unsuccessful applicants and inform them so. Once you have made appointments for interviews, it is acceptable to contact them 2 days later to inform them whether they were successful or not. I would personally want to be informed of any developments. That way you are not sitting and waiting in anticipation.
