This necessary effort responds to a strong demand from the youth work community of practice, picked up from the EYWA. In that context, the Youth Partnership will carry out specific research on recognition on youth work, in line with the policy decisions from both European Union and Council of Europe, namely the December 2020 EU Council resolution on the framework for establishing a European Youth Work Agenda, the Bonn Declaration[2] from the 3rd European Youth Work Convention and the Council of Europe’s recommendation on youth work.

Wales is doing a mapping of the voluntary youth work sector.  The umbrella body say it represents the sector (some 140 NGOs are members).  Our scoping exercise finds over 800 NGOs claiming to do youth work, employing thousands of ‘youth workers’ in both paid and voluntary positions (in ‘youth work’, sports, theatres, Welsh language, homelessness, mental health, criminal justice, international exchanges…..). Nail that one down.

The estimations of the number of youth workers working in the NGOs ranges from 500 to 3000. 
 
In addition to these, there are leisure time workers who do youth park as part of their work. The number of these is not known. 
 
Nobody knows the number of volunteers. 
 
In order to come up with a number of youth workers, one should have a shared definition of who is a youth worker. I fear that coming up with a common European definition covering all practice architectures of youth work will prove out to be tremendously difficult.

In Croatia (where I'm local) we already have informal FB groups with Youth workers and I'm sure there are a few of these in other countries as well. Maybe, we can reach out to our members to see different practices and try to map out youth workers in that way (as well). Just on top of my mind - to do some online campaign with some sort of survey that will be shared with youth organizations in EU member states (or wider). We can make we can create some informal group that would "divide" among themselves the economies that we are targeting and then have the task of contacting national youth councils or other organizations in order to reach all the people who identify as youth workers and they would register or apply through that survey and in this way, we can get some first insight into the number of people who are considered youth workers.
 
In the long term, it can also be a platform on which we gather them and have a base that can then be further used to strengthen the recognition, visibility, and strengthening of youth work.
