The signs of BPD that are found in children are mood swings, finding it hard to express or control their emotions, intense moments of anger, depression and quickly changing from loving someone to admiring someone else to disliking them. In adolescence, some signs of BPD are distorted or dysfunctional self-image; a damaged identity, A persistent fear of abandonment and rejection, and mood changes without a clear cause that are lasting. BPD can be diagnosed as early as 12 years old if symptoms are constant and can be diagnosed later on in adulthood.

The signs that can be often seen are children showing related signs to their behaviours such as getting an attitude at school, how they play independently and with other children within their age group. In adolescence, some signs of NPD are lack of friends or relationships with others, excessive social media posting of themselves, often checking themselves in mirrors and setting unrealistic goals. NPD cannot be diagnosed until the age of 18.
