Abortion

My opinion on abortion is that it should be legal. If there is ever an unwanted pregnancy (that can be a cause of terrible circumstances including rape, incest, deformity, the inability to support the child, or serious health risks) it should be the women choice whether or not to have the body. I strongly support the saying "My body, my choice". The people fighting against abortion, especially men, should have no say in what women decide. According to the constitution, a fetus is not considered a human and is not murder.

Environmental policy

Democrats are much more for environmental precautions, such as supporting the US in their attempts to slow down climate change, reducing our use of plastic water bottles, and also getting ride of gas emitting cars. Republicans have a larger portion of their party against doing things like this which is why I am leaning more towards the democratic side for this issue. I think climate change is a very serious issue, and now that I am learning more about its negative effects on earth due to the environmental class I am enrolled in I really thing that things like carpooling or using biodegradable/ metal straws are very beneficial and worth the extra effort.

Medicare (opposing viewpoint)

Medicare is the federal health insurance made for anyone over the age of 65, or for people with disabilities or conditions. Democrats seem to favor the government supporting the well being of United States citizens while republicans think that the government shouldn't be as involved. Although I see the democrats view, I also see the republican parties view. I understand why independence is valued in healthcare, and that you should just have to pay for your own medical care and not pay extra for the ones who don't have the money to support themselves.

Social security

Social security is the extra support from the federal government given to people with little to no income. It is also for people who are retired, disabled, or unemployed. Social security is a way the federal government ensures that catastrophic events, like the great depression, will never happen again. The democratic party is much more for social security than the latter. The Democrats believe that social security isn't a handout because you must work to earn the right to collect these benefits. I think that it is a great way to provide a livable income for almost every working American. Social security is great when people are struggling with a family loss, navigating a divorce, or when your health prevents you from working.

College Tuition

According to "Democrats overwhelmingly favor free college tuition, while Republicans are divided by age, education" by Hannah Hartig, 85% of democrats support free college while only 36% republicans support free college tuition. I support free college tuition. Not everyone has large sums of money or comes from rich backgrounds. I think that just because you had a lucky draw at birth and have enough money to afford a great educational college it shouldn't mean you get to further your education more sufficiently than someone without enough money.

After thoroughly researching these 5 controversial topics in our country, I have realized I side with the democratic party. For almost every one of these topics I am very democratic. I think that free/ cheaper college tuition is a great idea, I think social security is a great way of benefiting the united states workers, abortion should be your choice because it is your body, and the world is suffering a lot through environmental issues and we should all try and do our best to make our world a better place. Although I do see, understand, and respect the republican side I think that the democratic party best represents me.
