Answer 3. How do different philosophical positions affect what research methodologies we use?

By positivism, the researcher tends to view themselves independent of the research and tend to use quantitative Methods such as questionnaires to get a quantifiable data. By interpretivism, the researcher is more inclined to be more involved in the research, hence they would want to be more interactive with the subject. Hence Qualitative Methods such as interview will be used by them to collect data which are more debatable, non-numerical, and unstructured. Realism is the combination of both positivism and interpretivism.

Answer 4. Do you think that truths are there to be discovered or are they there to be created?

Positivists believe in discovering the truth.

Interpretivists create truths.

Truths independent of humans do exist but subjective interpretations affect the perception of the world around us. Both philosophies present strong points.
I think truths are meant to be discovered. However, we do find ourselves in situations where we believe truths that are created. So, I would say that we can't pin it down to one answer because we definitely do find ourselves believing both. Although the former leans more towards reliability because when it comes to creating truths, what one might experience or believe might not be the same for everybody.

Hannaa Bergström represents the positivist research position, based on a realist conception of the world whereby truths exist and are there to be revealed by researchers, in this instance, asking the correct questions and using valid and verifiable methodologies such as the scientific method. The approach of her study relies on scientific evidence, such as experiments and statistics, to reveal the true nature of how happiness is being measure

Mika Holkerii represents the Constructivism position which suggests that our world is the sum of our understandings, of the world. His methodology is to ask people about feelings and behaviours which are hard to pin down but they do it as meticulously as with the scientific method and he believes that certain phenomena are best quantified and measured so that they can be applied universally. Constructivism is felt to be more sensitive to human interactions and socially interactive process.
