In addition to the risks posed by terrorist attacks, human error and natural disasters can lead to dangerous and costly accidents. The 1986 Chernobyl disaster in Ukraine led to the deaths of 30 employees in the initial explosion and has has had a variety of negative health effects on thousands across Russia and Eastern Europe. A massive tsunami bypassed the safety mechanisms of several power plants in 2011, causing three nuclear meltdowns at a power plant in Fukushima, Japan, resulting in the release of radioactive materials into the surrounding area. In both disasters, hundreds of thousands were relocated, millions of dollars spent, and the radiation-related deaths are being evaluated to this day. Cancer rates among populations living in proximity to Chernobyl and Fukushima, especially among children, rose significantly in the years after the accidents (4)(5). https://www.greenamerica.org/fight-dirty-energy/amazon-build-cleaner-cloud/10-reasons-oppose-nuclear-energy

people suffer; When there is a nuclear disaster, the public pays the price in three ways. First, their lives and health are put at risk from massive releases of radioactive materials. Second, their lives are disrupted. They have to leave their homes, set up temporary homes without compensation and live without jobs. Families can be split up. Parents live with the ongoing worry that the health of their children may suffer. Third, the people who suffer the misery and disruption of a nuclear disaster end up paying the clean-up costs, the decommissioning of destroyed reactors and the compensation through their taxes. http://www.greenpeace.org/eastasia/news/stories/climate-energy/2012/nuclear-energy-dirty-dangerous/

Scaling up to 14,500 nuclear plants isn’t possible simply due to the limitation of feasible sites. Nuclear plants need to be located near a source of water for cooling, and there aren’t enough locations in the world that are safe from droughts, flooding, hurricanes, earthquakes, or other potential disasters that could trigger a nuclear accident. The increase in extreme weather events predicted by climate models only compounds this risk. https://www.greenamerica.org/fight-dirty-energy/amazon-build-cleaner-cloud/10-reasons-oppose-nuclear-energy

Cost overruns and delays are the norm for reactor construction. For example, the French nuclear company Areva is building new reactors in Finland and in France. The costs of both projects have increased by about €3bn each, nearly double the original price and the reactors are nowhere near completion. This problem is repeated with almost every reactor project in the world.

7. Not enough sites

Chernobyl Deformities: The Effects of the Nuclear Disaster There were many health effects that were short term and long term after the disaster. This applies to both animals and humans that suffered from Chernobyl mutations in their generation and those that followed. This was due to the radiation and other debris and chemicals that were released from the Reactor that exploded. It was the radioactive cloud that affected the country as well as other countries, far and near. The first evidence found made people believe that the contamination came from Sweden when radioactive material was found on their nuclear plant employees’ clothing.

Read more at: https://chernobylguide.com/chernobyl_mutations/
