Pathetic fallacy is where the weather reflects a character's mood. This is relevant to the chapter because during their tribal dance where they're killing Simon, a storm is also happening, so the weather is reflecting the character's savage, tribal mood. "kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood!" The blue-white scar was constant, the noise endurable.' pathetic fallacy is also used at the end of the chapter where the weather eventually dies down-as does Simon and how it reflects the scene of someone dying. 'Towards midnight the rain ceased and the clouds drifted away...then the breeze died too..'

Jack orders the boys to dance with Roger miming the pig and with the chant "Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood!" As the storm gathers intensity Roger joins the hunters leaving the centre of the dance empty and "a thing" crawls out of the forest and into the empty space. The thing, a beast to the bys, tries to cry out something about a dead man on a hill, but the boys in their crazed state attack Simon and leave him dead at the edge of the sea.

"The air was ready to explode" (p179) - Golding uses the weather as a way of expressing the current situation with the schoolboys on the island. The use of metaphor and pathetic fallacy referring to the explosion of the air prompts the reader to think of violence exploding on the island and the sense of unease and unhappiness that Piggy and Ralph are experiencing.

Simon's nose had been bleeding and he was covered in blood when he stumbled upon the tribe doing their savage dance. They pretended Simon was the beast, due to his bloody appearance, but got to carried away. When he tried to fight back, Golding referred to his weak attempts as "the tearing of teeth and claws", suggesting his appearance as the beast. When her was finally killed his body was described as being a "small beast, stained in blood" reiterating back to his mild, "small" appearance being portrayed as the beast.

Simon, who claims that the beast is actually a dead parachutist was savagely killed by Jack and his tribe, who want to believe that there is a beast so they can hunt it down. Chapter nine explores how the effects of being in a group with strong opinions and clashing personalities, can result in great divisions among the group. But, it also means that they are just following each other as they turn into beasts, many act like sheep and succumb to the pressure of savagery.
