Usually, percent yield < 100% (actual yield < theoretical yield)

Reasons for this can include:

incomplete or competing reactions
loss of sample during recovery

% Yield = actual yield/ theoretical yield x 100

If a reaction is 85% efficient, it means it yields only 85 g actual product out of a theoretical maximum of 100g.
