"From right now...this child got a mother. But you a womanless man" (Wilson 2.3.79). Rose is portrayed as a motherly person throughout the play, being the balance in her relationship with Troy. She was always playing the role of the wife, being there for Troy as the perfect housewife. Even after she finds out about Troy's affair, she wants to hang on to the role but she lets go, for herself and her son. Rose was had clung onto the role of the wife for so long, she forgot what it felt like to tend to herself. Even though her motherly side caves into helping Troy with his baby, she is no longer attached to him as a wife.

"A motherless child as got a hard time. (She takes the baby from him.) From right now this child got a mother. But you a womanless man." (79) Rose sacrifices her life to care for the child of her cheating husband. She does what is morally right to care for this child and sacrifices a lot of her time and effort. She then sacrifices their marriage to the fact that Troy cheated on her and is now gaslighting her to thinking it is her own fault and she needs to care for his child.

I used to tremble every time you called my name" (Wilson 2.4.86). As Cory has finally reached adulthood, he feels that he is finally able to express his criticism and disapproval of what he feels is eighteen years of injustice from his father, Troy. Cory proclaims that he has never felt comfortable around his father due to his aggressive nature and that the bare necessities he provided for Cory were simply not enough for Troy to earn his respect. By confronting his father in a fearless and aggressive attitude, he is finally revealing to Troy the injustices he felt as his son and unleashing his build-up anger in the process.

Now that Cory is older he is starting to feel the pain he felt growing up with his dad. He expressed how Troy was jealous that he had a better chance at sports than him and ruined it. Also, the fact that his dad gave him anxiety because of how intimidating Troy was to him. Now all of the anger is being given to Troy.

Regardless of her own feelings towards her husband's betrayal, she decides to take in the baby as she doesn't want the child to be motherless. She is an example of doing the right thing despite personal emotions because an average would not mother a bastard child. She decides to sacrifice her feelings and her freedom by staying with Troy even when she later tells him that she is no longer his wife.

You just be out on the road by your lonesome and you see one of them trains coming and you just kinda go like this..." (Wilson 2.3.79).
Troy is willing to give up his life for his new baby. This represents the love and compassion he has to raise this child, despite others. Even though Rose is not agreeing with Troy and his past decisions, he is sacrificing his old family to be with his new daughter.

Their marriage had been difficult lately, as they had barely spoken for the past six months, but the greatest defeat for Rose was seeing Troy bring home another woman's baby. She says, "this child got a mother. But you a womanless man," meaning she will care for the innocent baby, but she is done putting up with Troy.
