Band is who I am.

There are too few words to express how much band has given me over these past eight years. The thrill, excitement, and joy of band has been a defining feature of myself for so long that I am angry and disappointed that my last year, I am being barred from participation as a result of my academic aspirations. Band has given me the best years of my life and as a result I have given more of myself than what is normally prudent towards advancing and giving to the program.

Band has given me some of my most enduring friendships and carried me through my darkest hours. It’s my safe haven, and is a place of escape from all the exhausting, crushing forces in my everyday life.

Concert band has given me an appreciation of music from both an aesthetic and intellectual standpoint through the practice of beautiful literature. Marching band has instilled in me the value of hard work through repeated practice, dedication, perseverance— it motivates me to challenge my physical boundaries for the first time in my life. Even when it was difficult, I still showed up for the band to contribute my part, to play music I love and be with the family I love.

Both aspects of the band program are endlessly exciting and thrilling... and the band is like a family, comforting in ways you could never understand if you haven’t experienced it.

I just can’t understand why Harford County thinks that they should restrict long time players and expel them from their own high school band. It’s easy to bar students when you’re not the one being deprived of one of your greatest sources of happiness. To have given so much to my band, to have forged such strong bonds and to be so dedicated to this family, only to be ripped away by outside forces who know nothing about Edgewood and our identity as a band... that is unforgivable.

band is a community

i know this is gonna sound cheesy, but band has really inspired me to move on with musical education and i’ve met so many friends along the way that have helped me through so much, and i’m forever grateful for them. musical education is so important because it not only lets all kinds of students express themselves, students will also learn things that they’re passionate about. it hurts to see people get dragged away from this community, and i hope that enough awareness comes to it so something will change.

Noah Gentry- Orchestra

While I’m not in band, I know how important it is to be a part of a music group. I’ve been in orchestra since elementary school, and I couldn’t imagine my school career or my life without it. I absolutely love playing my viola, as I practice very often and participate in orchestral activities outside of school. Being in orchestra has given me many friends and taught me teamwork and patience. Band is a much closer knit group, as they are with each other very often, especially during marching band season. Not being in band would be very devastating for those left out of such a wonderful group and experience!
