Juliet was confessing her love for Romeo by saying, "my bounty is as boundless as the sea, my love as deep." Similarly, the lyrics "this love is ours" and "my heart is yours" express this. Juliet knew that there would be a conflict because he was a Montague and she a Capulet, saying, "tis but thy name that is my enemy." She knew everyone else wouldn't approve of their love. This shows up in the lyrics "seems like there's always someone who disapproves...they'll judge it like they know about me and you." Nevertheless, Juliet said she loved Romeo and would even abandon her name to be with him, saying, "be but sworn my love and I'll no longer be a Capulet." Likewise, the lyrics "the jury's out, but my choice is you" show how she chose Romeo in spite of all of the obstacles she knew she would face. The lyrics "any snide remarks from my father about your tattoos will be ignored" remind me of how Juliet knew her parents would scold her for loving a Montague; that's why she said, "o, be some other name!" Even so, she'd choose to be with him. Also, the lyrics "your hands are tough but they are where mine belong" remind me how Juliet and Romeo touched hands at the party and how she was probably thinking about that too.

By Bruno Mars

Oh, her eyes, her eyes
Make the stars look like they're not shinin'
Her hair, her hair
Falls perfectly without her trying
She's so beautiful
And I tell her everyday Yeah

I know, I know
When I compliment her she won't believe me
And it's so, it's so
Sad to think that she don't see what I see
But every time she asks me, "Do I look okay?" I say,

[Chorus:]
When I see your face (face, face...)
There's not a thing that I would change
'Cause you're amazing (amazing)
Just the way you are (are)
And when you smile (smile, smile...)
The whole world stops and stares for a while
'Cause, girl, you're amazing (amazing)
Just the way you are (are). Yeah

Her lips, her lips
I could kiss them all day if she'd let me
Her laugh, her laugh
She hates but I think it's so sexy
She's so beautiful
And I tell her everyday,

Oh you know, you know, you know
I'd never ask you to change
If perfect's what you're searching for
Then just stay the same
So don't even bother asking if you look okay
You know I'll say,

[Chorus]

The way you are
The way you are
Girl, you're amazing (amazing)
Just the way you are (are)

[Chorus]

I chose this song because it reminds me of the scene in Act I when Romeo and Juliet first met. Romeo was so in love with Juliet and was blown away by her beauty. From the very first moment they met, Romeo knew he was in love with her. The lyrics "her eyes make the stars look like they're not shining" remind me of when Romeo said that Juliet's beauty shone brighter than anything he'd ever seen. He said, "she doth teach the torches to burn bright," and later on, "two of the fairest stars...do entreat her eyes to twinkle in their spheres till they return." He even compared her to a jewel in the lines "she hangs upon the cheek of night like a rich jewel." Romeo was just amazed by Juliet's beauty, saying, "beauty too rich for use, for earth too dear." This same message is conveyed throughout the whole song. Specifically, in the chorus, it says, "when I see your face, there's not a thing that I would change 'cause you're amazing..." Her beauty is also shown in the lyrics "when you smile, the whole world stops and stares for a while." The lyrics "her lips, I could kiss them all day if she'd let me" refer to how Romeo kissed Juliet. Juliet said that she was a "saint" who had "lips that they must use in prayer," but even so, she let Romeo kiss her and touch her hand. The lyrics "just the way you are" are synonymous with how Romeo vowed he loved Juliet in spite of the fact that she was a Capulet and he a Montague.

Neither of them liked the idea of being apart, but they both knew it was the only way they had a shot at their love. Romeo would be banished to Mantua, which matches the lyric "I'm a thousand miles away." The lyrics "don't you worry about the distance" and "don't you miss me, two more years..." remind me of how Romeo was trying to console Juliet as he left. In distress, Juliet said, "I shall be much in years ere I again behold my Romeo." To comfort her, Romeo promised to write to her very often, saying, "I will omit no opportunity that may convey my greetings, love, to thee." The lyrics "times are getting hard, but...we'll have the life we knew we would" apply to Romeo because his banishment was a huge obstacle to their relationship, let alone the fact that their families were enemies; even so, he knew that someday they would be back together and everything would work out fine. He told her, "all these woes shall serve for sweet discourses in our time to come." This shows that Romeo was optimistic that their love will work out, while Juliet more anxious to have him go, saying "I see thee...as one dead in the bottom of a tomb." This whole song is sung from Romeo's perspective as he tries to convince Juliet, or Delilah, that everything will be okay. Also, the lyrics "our friends would all make fun of us and we'll just laugh along" express how the two lovers knew that everyone wouldn't like their relationship, but that they'll brush them off because they believed their love was more important.

First, Juliet went to Friar Laurence for advice, telling him about how her parents were forcing her to marry Paris and how she couldn't tell them about Romeo. This matches up with the lyrics "everybody's always talking at me...I wanna listen to my own heart talking" and "I wanna do my own thing." She said, "tell me how I may prevent it," and, "give me some present counsel," which shows that she was unsure of how to move forward. This says the same thing in the lyrics "did you ever not know?" Then, Juliet and the Friar made a plan, one that Juliet had agreed to wholeheartedly, saying, "love give me strength, and strength shall help afford." This is shown in the lyrics "I'll give it all I got...you know you can bet on it." Later on, when Juliet was in her room all alone the night before her wedding, she wondered, "What if this mixture do not work at all?" "What if it be a poison?" "How if...I wake before the time that Romeo come to redeem me?" Her skepticism is conveyed in the lyrics "how will I know if there's a path worth taking?" and "should I question every move I make?" Then she decides to trust Friar Laurence and drink the potion, saying, "Romeo, I come! this do I drink to thee." Likewise, the lyrics "all I gotta do is believe" and "will I find what I lost...you can bet on it" show that Juliet has chosen Romeo in spite of all of the problems she thought could come up.

By Christina Perry

Heart beats fast
Colors and promises
How to be brave?
How can I love when I'm afraid to fall?
But watching you stand alone,
All of my doubt suddenly goes away somehow.

One step closer

[Chorus:]
I have died every day waiting for you
Darling, don't be afraid I have loved you
For a thousand years
I'll love you for a thousand more

Time stands still
Beauty in all she is
I will be brave
I will not let anything take away
What's standing in front of me
Every breath
Every hour has come to this

One step closer

[Chorus]

And all along I believed I would find you
Time has brought your heart to me
I have loved you for a thousand years
I'll love you for a thousand more

One step closer [2x]

[Chorus]

And all along I believed I would find you
Time has brought your heart to me
I have loved you for a thousand years
I'll love you for a thousand more

I chose this song because it reminds me of the scene in Act V when Romeo saw Juliet supposedly dead before him. The lyrics "beauty in all she is" remind me of how beautiful Romeo thought Juliet was, even though she was dead, or so he thought. He said, "beauty's ensign yet is crimson in thy lips and in thy cheeks" and "death...had no power yet upon thy beauty." Romeo was a little scared of dying, as anyone would be, and he said, "Eyes, look your last! Arms, take your last embrace," showing that he was somewhat frightened of oblivion. In the same way, the lyrics "how to be brave?" and "how can I love when I'm afraid to fall?" convey feelings of uncertainty. Yet the lyrics go on to say "all of my doubt suddenly goes away." So too, Romeo's doubt must have gone away because he said, "here's to my love" and drank of the poison. His reasoning for this is found in the lyrics "I have loved you for a thousand years; I'll love you for a thousand more." This is because Romeo blamed fate for taking his love away from him. He thought that killing himself would defy fate and get rid of his bad luck. He implies that, though he was killing himself, he was still very much in love with Juliet and would still love her even after they were gone. Also, since the only person he'd loved was no longer alive, he might have followed through with this in the hopes of reuniting with Juliet in the afterlife.
