An unfortunate example of such concerns is  the Chinese river dolphin, a living relic of Chinese history that is now critically extinct due to the dam. In addition, there will be changes to the habitat, which is detrimental to the well established food web and the biodiversity of species.

Indeed, the Three Gorges Dam produces 84 terwatt-hours of hydroelectric energy annually benefiting the atmosphere (http://large.stanford.edu/courses/2015/ph240/mikkelsen2/). But, altering the river flow of a natural habitat can directly affect biodiversity and productivity in wetlands and lakes downstream of a dam. There may be a surplus of energy, but with the depletion of thousands of species, especially with primary production, which will ultimately impact our food source. And even if there are many tourists to see the new  "Wonder of the World", it would take years for the tourism income to displace the $10.4 billion of money it cost to create the Three Gorges Dam (A Struggle for Power in China).

The reservoir created by the dam flooded 156,00 acres of land, forcing millions of residents to relocate and lose their homes and jobs (A Struggle for Power in China). Indeed the dam itself creates a few jobs for citizens, but it does not equate to the amount jobs and homes lost to the flooded towns of Chongqing, Jiangjin, and Yongchuan.

Though opponents would state the irrigation benefits by the water controlled by the dam, the diverse crops that required annual crops will be lost. Though people can create innovative ways to utilize their water source, they can never reverse the loss of biodiversity of their crops.
Moreover, the dam submerged beautiful cliffs and mountains that had once lined the Yangtze River, ruining the natural aesthetic and cultural relics that were previously on the banks.
