High School Lesson Plan and Results Report

Lesson Plan and Result Report Level: High School (10th Grade)

This lesson plan focused on social-emotional learning, specifically on understanding and managing emotions. The selected mindsets and behaviors were:

M1: Belief in the development of the whole self, including a healthy balance of mental, social/emotional, and physical well-being.

B-SMS 7: Effective coping skills.

B-SMS 1: Responsibility for self and actions.

These mindsets and behaviors align well with the lesson topic, they emphasize emotional regulation, coping strategies, and self-responsibility, which are crucial for managing emotions and behaviors in difficult situations.

Additional Mindsets and/or Behaviors:

B-SMS 2: Self-discipline and self-control.

This would be beneficial as it directly addresses managing one's actions and reactions, further reinforcing the lesson's focus on handling emotions constructively.

The pre- and post-assessment items align well with the mindsets and behaviors by evaluating students' understanding and management of their emotions. However, some items, such as "I don’t usually get in trouble for how I display my feelings in difficult situations," may not directly measure the depth of emotional understanding or coping strategies but rather the outcomes of emotional displays. The lesson content and materials effectively matched their mindsets and behaviors though. The use of a feelings wheel, journal prompts, and the "Snack Attack" video facilitated discussions on identifying emotions, understanding their impact on behaviors, and developing coping strategies. These activities aligned with M1, B-SMS 7, and B-SMS 1 by promoting emotional awareness and self-regulation. Timing can significantly impact the results of the lesson. A single 30-minute session may not provide sufficient time for all students to fully grasp and apply the concepts. Moreover, delivering the lesson during the last period could affect students' engagement and retention due to end-of-day fatigue. More sessions or extended time could enhance understanding and application of emotional regulation skills.

To align the lesson plan with my creativity, knowledge of the ASCA National Model, and skillset, I would:

Extend the Lesson Duration: Increase the lesson time or split it into multiple sessions to allow for deeper exploration and practice of emotional regulation skills.

Incorporate Interactive Activities: Use role-playing or group discussions to provide hands-on practice in managing emotions and behaviors.

Cultural Relevance: Tailor examples and scenarios to reflect the diverse cultural backgrounds of students, making the content more relatable and impactful.

Follow-Up Support: Implement follow-up sessions or individual check-ins to reinforce the skills learned and provide additional support to students who need it.

Role of School Counselors as Advocates for Every Student

School counselors play a crucial role as advocates for every student. They are responsible for ensuring that all students have equitable access to educational resources and opportunities. School counselors must work tirelessly to remove barriers to success, whether they be academic, social, or emotional. This involves collaborating with teachers, administrators, parents, and the community to create a supportive and inclusive environment. Counselors should also be proactive in addressing issues such as bullying, mental health, and family challenges, advocating for policies and practices that promote the well-being and success of every student.
