I believe my responsibilities as a teacher are......

to instill a love for learning in my students, create a classroom that is a community, and for everyone to feel equal and that their voice is heard. I want my students to feel at home in the classroom. I don't want them to be afraid to ask questions and express their own opinions during class. I want my students to be able to form their own ideas and beliefs for themselves. In one of the articles we read during class, it said that "the purpose of education is to create in a person the ability to look at the world for himself to make his own decisions," (Baldwin, pg. 678). This goes perfectly with what I believe falls under my responsibilities as a teacher. I am teaching students to be their own person.

is for everyone including the teacher. To me, someone never stops learning. You can learn something new everyday, and the same goes for teachers. Teachers can learn through their students and their experiences in the classroom. Students can also learn from one another, not just their teachers. This is why I think it is important to build community in the classroom. In chapter two of "American Education", it talks about how you can build community through extracurricular activities. These activities prepare students for their future work places. "In the social whirl of the high school, students were supposed to gain a sense of community and school spirit, which, after graduation, they express in their social relations and at their workplace," (Spring, pg. 62). Learning goes farther than just academic standards. I want an environment that provokes learning and keeps students engaged. Learning comes with experiences, connections, and engagements. If a student is not engaged, then they won't be learning.

is more than just instruction. It is more than just standing in front of a classroom giving out facts and information. Teaching is about learning as well. We can learn from our students, especially about things that we ourselves might not know much about. In one of the articles we read, it talked about teaching based on students lives ("Qué es deportar?). The article discussed deportation and how this may not be something that we know much about and need to have the students who have experience with this share with the class what is happening. Teaching is incorporating everyone to learn from one another. I really liked in the article ("Who's stealing our jobs?"), that the teacher did not just give the students the answers and facts, he let gave them the information they needed to get the answers for themselves. We need to teach like that and allow our students to be investigators and to give them the tools they need to find answers for themselves.

to provide equal opportunity for all students. Today certain schools have unequal educational opportunities for students. I believe that every child deserves a good education. School should also be a safe enjoyable place for kids and sadly, that is not always the case. In the articles that we have read during class, it talked about a boy who got the police called on him, and to him school was no longer a safe place for him. (School to prison pipeline). Schooling should be meaningful for students and they should be able to make connections and enjoy what is happening in the classroom. I want my students to WANT to come to school. I don't want my students to look at school as a place that they dread going. As a teacher I will do everything in my power to make my classroom fun, safe, and full of learning for my students.

important to my classroom. I want each of my students to feel and know that they matter and are a crucial part to the classroom community. Every student should be heard and have a voice in the classroom. Each child is different and as a teacher it will be my responsibility to learn more about them and create relationships. In order to build a strong classroom community, every student needs to feel like they belong. This goes a long with my belief that all my future students deserve equal opportunity. I want my classroom to be inclusive and a place for everyone. Sadly, "unequal educational opportunities continue to plague American schools", (Spring, American Education, Pg. 143). I want my classroom to be full of equal opportunities.

are actively involved in the classroom. I am a strong believer of not standing in front of a classroom and lecturing at kids. I do not learn that way, and I am sure that is true for many young elementary students. I think that when students are actively working and involved in a lesson, they are truly learning something. I also believe that students do not learn from standardized testing. Standardized testing adds stress to students to learn about specific materials and to memorize it accordingly for the test. This is not true learning nor does it adequately assess their knowledge. In chapter 4 of "American Education", it talks about how schools adapt tracking and ability grouping in classrooms to group students together into certain intellectual classes. (Pg.86). This plays a role in a students educational achievement. (pg.87)

create a sense of community in the classroom. I want my students to be able to lean on not only just me as the teacher, but on one another. If my students feel comfortable in the classroom then they will feel confident in asking questions, and sharing their ideas, which I think is a key part of learning. In my class there will be a lot of hands on learning which I think is another way that they will learn best. I will not have a classroom where I stand in the front and lecture the lesson the whole time. From experience, I know that not a lot of learning comes from that, especially in young elementary students. learning doesn't stop in the classroom either, In chapter 2 of "American Education", it discusses the importance of extracurricular activities. As a teacher I believe that is my job to help my students find their passions and encourage them to take their learning outside the classroom by joining a group or after school club. Overall, I think my students learn best when I am involved in their life and take the time to get to know them and their passions and how they learn. That also goes back to a previous post as "my responsibilities as a teacher".

who you are surrounded with where you feel a sense of comfort and acceptance. In my beliefs I have talked about how important it is to have a classroom that is a family. Students feel most comfortable around people who are like them or who they share differences with. As teachers we need to go the extra mile to get to know our students lives, family, and community. A students family/ community is apart of who they are and can explain certain aspects about them. During class right now we are doing a community project where we are going out to the surrounding area of the school and seeing what our students live around and who they interact with on a daily basis. This is so important to do in order to get to know your group of students as a teacher and to understand where they come from. This as teachers help us develop reality pedagogy with our students. On page 27, of "For White Folks Who Teach in the Hood", it says that reality pedagogy is "an approach for teaching and learning that has a primary goal of meeting each students on his or her own cultural and emotional turf"

is important inside and outside the classroom. Collaboration should not be restricted to just the classroom or inside the school, but should expand into the community. I think it is important for schools and teachers to collaborate with others within the community, whether it is with parents or others that have a daily impact on students lives. In class right now we are doing a community project where we are learning more about the surrounding area of the school and the resources within the community. This is so important for teachers to try and do because it will help us help our students in the best way that we can.

Not every teacher activist have to be extreme and outwardly show what they are doing for their students. Being a teacher activist can be something as little as a home visit to a students home who we need to understand better about who they are. Taking action to get what needs to be done for our students is what being a teacher activist is all about.
