I Promise by Lebron James

What a great book! The simple promises in the book make this a great selection to read at the beginning of the school year. I love the diversity of the characters. Although the characters in the book are younger (K-2 grades), there are ample opportunities that could work for upper grade students as well. Upper grade students can define and analyze the vocabulary words and phrases from the book ("strive", "elders", "uplift" "cross bridges and break down walls", "stand tall", etc...) Students can also create their own promises as goals for the school year.

This is a great book to introduce color words. I could see this book being utilized in art lessons to understand primary and secondary colors. The subtle LGBTQ+ message at the end gives readers and families and opportunity to extend the conversation at their own pace.

This is a sweet story that could be used at the beginning of the school year for second and third graders. I love how the girls share glimpses of their previous homes and cultures. The perspective of their teacher being homesick is heart-warming. This would be great for students who are new to a class or school.

This year I have struggled to find modern books in my library with African American boys as main characters. I was able to find more African American girl characters than boys. I've been purposeful in finding books with African American boys. This modern book is written with rhythm and rhyme. You can hear the song and poetry when reading it. I can't wait to put this book on display in my elementary school library!

Recently, my husband was asking his niece about her stuffed dinosaur toy. He was surprised when she didn't identify the dinosaur as male or female. This book gently introduces and explains gender identification. I love that the relationship between the boy and stuffed bear strengthens after the bear confesses that he prefers to be a female bear.

There are ample opportunities for classroom discussions and further research about pollution and Native Americans. The illustrations are beautiful-well deserving of the 2021 Caldecott Medal.

This picture book is better for upper grade students because of the content and length of the book. I love the idea of how a place has history. After reading the book I would use Google Earth to see how our school and town has changed over time. It could lead to classroom discussions on progress and its impact.
