I think that was the source of his fear, that there was no one he could go home to or ask for help which lead him to continue to run and cowar from the brothers for years. He even says it himself, how he has no one to back him up like the kids he was humiliated by.
I think when people talk to others, it becomes easier to handle the emotional weight of being bullied, called racial slurs, and poverty.
