Hitler invaded Stalingrad with the hopes of cutting Soviet Shipping through the Volga River. However, he could have done this in many places, unlike the city of Stalingrad. Many historians believe he did the to demoralize the Russians and embarrass Joseph Stalin. The Battle of Stalingrad is widely considered to one of the bloodiest battles of the war, there were nearly 2 million people killed during the fighting, not to mention the tens of thousands of Soviet civilians killed. It was fought in the freezing winter tundra of Russia. The Germans were continually pushed back by the Soviets, but they were suffering severe casualties each time they stopped an offensive from the axis. Although, the Luftwaffe dominated the skies and within days the Volga River was made impassable. The Germans played into the Soviets hand launching an offensive. The Soviets in arguably the greatest stroke of military genius of World War II, they found a defensive ring around Stalingrad, surrounding and trapping nearly 300,000 Axis soldiers. This was an excellent decision because now the Germans were trapped without food, and had to try and survive the Harsh winter months. They put the Germans in a situation they couldn't possibly win. With the Germans stretched thin, the Russians slowly broke through the western side of the city. Even with his men freezing. starving, and low on munition, Hitler still refused to surrender and his men continue fighting. The Russians completed their re-claiming of Stalingrad by February 1943. This was the first Military failure of the War to be publicly addressed by Hitler. This marked a key turning point in the War as the Russians finally began pushing Germans back on the defensive and significantly bolstered Russian Confidence on the Eastern Front. Foreshados ho Over-expansionism will lead to the downfall of the Axis and the Nazi Movement.

After tensions of the US and Japan continually increase, Japan bombed the military at Pearl Harbor. America tried to stop the global expansion of Japan during the great depression. Japan felt their only chance was to use the element of surprise to their advantage. They were planning to destroy the US navy's morale and drive them into WWII. All 8 Us battleships were either sunken or damaged as well as killing 2,400 Americans. FDR referred to this day as a date that will live in infamy. This event resulted in the united states ending their period of isolation and eventually dropping a nuclear bomb on Hiroshima leading to Japan's surrender.

This was certainly a success and took many soldiers further needed in the war out of harms was and allowed them to continue to fight the Axis powers.

This battle between the U.S. and Japan lasted around 3 days (June 3-6, 1942), though much of it was over by June 4th--the next two days were spent by the U.S. troops attacking the Japanese. The goal of this battle for the Japanese was mainly to take out the rest of the Pacific fleet after Pearl Harbor, and by extension, establishing further superiority on sea and in the air. This battle was significant because had the U.S. not won, Japan wouldn't have resorted to defense for the rest of the war. They could have caused further damage, but this prevented the Japanese from attempting to expand in the pacific or doing anything else. It also raised morale for Allied troops, tipping the scales even further in their favor by more or less taking a large force out of the equation.

After the battle of Normandy, D-day began, when 156,000 American/British forces arrived on the beaches on Normandy. The location of this fight was a struggle for the Americans, since there was a major cliff they had to climb up in order to reach the enemy. It required a lot of planning and proper material. After D-day, the allies conducted a campaign to mislead the Germans about the invasion target, and by late August all of France was liberated. The Normandy landings have been called ¨The beginning of the end of war in Europe¨

The battle of Normandy, also known as D-Day started in June and lasted until August. This long battle was well planned out by the Allies to fake-out the German defense. They were deceptive on where they would attack from but none the less, there was still heavily armed defenses set up in the beach waiting for the 156,000 troops. The Allies ended up deafeating the Germans making this is one of the most important fights in the war.

Tension between Japan and The US would arise as Japan was looking to expand in the Pacific. The US would restrict assist in the restriction of oil and other resources that Japan would need desperately during times of war. Sanctions and other penalties placed on Japan and western interference with Asian affairs would further agitate Japan. Japan knew that they would need to go to war with the US to establish themselves as a major world power. Japan would plan to destroy Pearl Harbor to demoralize the US and control the Pacific. The Japanese planned on destroying the Pacific fleet so the US would be unable defend against Japanese forces. The Japanese used a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor sinking 8 battle ships, damaged and destroyed 300 aircrafts, and killed some 2,400 Americans. This would appear as successful at first however they failed to destroy other key components of the Pacific fleet. Conflict between Japan and the US would end after the bombing of Hiroshima on August 6th 1945. FDR would later refer to the bombing as "a date which will live in infamy."

The Battle of the Bulge was the last German offensive in the Second World War. It was a brutal battle that lasted from December 1944 to January 1945, and was the costliest battle ever fought by the US army who suffered 100,000 casualties. The battle took place in the Ardennes forest and was an attempt to separate the French, British, and US troops. It was called the Battle of the Bulge because the allied troops looked like a bulge. The attack was during the cold winter and that made it harder for the allies to get the support needed, and they could not get air support till Christmas day when the weather cleared up. After the Germans plan failed they did not have the troops to resist anymore.

The battle of Normandy was an allied offensive on the beaches of Normandy in France. It was meant to be a surprise attack as the Allies perpetrated a misinformation campaign to make the Germans think the battle was coming from somewhere else. This battle started to turn the tides of the war as the Allies defeated the somewhat unprepared forces at Normandy and moved into the countryside. This battle really exemplified an Allied superiority with the amount of logistics that went into weakening the Germans through misinformation. The troops eventually made it to the Seine River and liberated France. This set up the Allies to be able to meet up with the Soviet Union and move into Germany.
