In order to generate excitement about reading and writing, the teacher uses her love for reading in order to build a connection with the students. She believes reading is a reward and not something they should look down upon in her classroom. She makes reading not a punishment, so instead of having them reading during recess the students read during times that they want to. Lastly, she has a "please read" bin where all students can put in any types of books that they want her to read. I think this helps engage all students into searching out books and finding interest in reading.

The teacher uses choice to motivate and engage the students by letting the students choose what books they want to read during a project they are on. She also makes sure to have a variety of books for all of her students. Furthermore, during free choice time, she sets up a corner of her room to be almost like a 'post office'. For this, she gives students mail, and they can write letters to whomever they want to. This helps students with their writing skills while also having fun.

I think she is successful because she cares about her student's well-being and truly wants the best for her students. I might use similar strategies like the "please read" bin and not using reading as a punishment to help encourage my students to love to read. I believe that being introduced to reading in a fun and interactive way truly dictates your overall opinion on literacy for a long time, so my whole goal will be to make reading seem like a thing you 'get' to do, not 'have' to do.

Choice is so important to students' literacy development because it can give them a sense of motivation for the students to work hard and wanting to learn more. When you do not have the choice to do something, it can be hard to truly enjoy what you are doing. Furthermore, learning literacy is not 'one-size fits all', all students will prefer different learning styles, different books, different environments, etc. If you forced each kid to learn the same way, you would never be successful.

One of the teachers encouraged her students to enjoy reading by showing her excitement about books; she often had conversations about the books she would read. She also would introduce new books to her students that would come into the classroom so that her students were informed about them. In this process she also would explain what interests were in the books; for example, she brought up how there were facts about myths in a volcano book. She also stopped giving her students prizes when they read a certain number of books; instead, she makes reading new and interesting by switching the way they read. For instance, she organized a day where they could read books while still in their pajamas.

The kindergarten teacher has a bin to allow students to add books to it that they can't yet read on their own for the teacher to go bad to and share with the students during read-aloud. The 3rd grade teacher does lots of things to keep her students engaged and excited with reading. She gets new books for the class based on what the students are interested in at the time. She also previews them to the students to get them to want to read them. Another thing she does is let them do special things with reading to make it fun like reading in the dark with flashlights. One thing both teachers did was not ever make reading be a punishment.
