My name is: Brooke Chasalow

I interned at: Chatham Middle School with Mrs. Dangler (6th grade science)

My internship experiences was: exciting and entertaining

Describe your role and responsibilities during your internship: I helped my mentor with most of her responsibilities such as grading homework and projects, planning out lessons and activities, teaching classes, answering student questions, and aiding students with their work. I also helped with a school-wide project where we decorated ceiling tiles with positive messages.

Describe how you think CHS prepared you for your internship: I learned the basic information that the students were being taught in my science classes and luckily remembered the information I learned in biology and had a strong background to help teach the students. Additionally, throughout my time at CHS, watching my teachers lead the classes surprisingly helped me when I was teaching the kids. I saw many different types of teachers and teaching styles which showed me how to be most effective for many students.

What did you love about your internship OR what is most memorable about your experience: Working with the kids and building relationships with them. It was a lot of fun being a role model for the students and getting to know them as well as seeing the impact my work had on the kids.

Who would be a good candidate for this internship in the future? What qualities/skills/interests are important to have: Someone who enjoys working with children, is outgoing and friendly, and has strong leadership skills. Working with middle schoolers can be challenging, so it also requires a lot of patience at times, but it can be super fun too.

Any last thoughts or reflections about your internship you want to share: Overall, working here was a great experience and was not at all what I expected. I learned a lot about teaching that I did not know before and saw a new side of school. It was really interesting to see what school is like from a teacher’s perspective rather than a student’s.

Chatham High School - Olivia Gorski

My name is: Olivia Gorski

I interned at: Chatham High School with Mrs. Ryan-Martin

My internship experiences was: fun and preparative

Describe your role and responsibilities during your internship: grading assignments using rubrics, formatting documents, setting up and executing labs, and observing classes.

Describe how you think CHS prepared you for your internship: Since I stayed in the high school, with a teacher that I know very well, there wasn't much for me to learn off the bat. I already knew most of the material from taking the class myself, so I would say this is the best way CHS prepared me.

What did you love about your internship OR what is most memorable about your experience?: I really loved being able to see the other side of things as a teacher rather than a student. As a student, you never see the behind the scenes of all the preparation teachers do prior to class. Being able to experience this really made me gain an appreciation for everything teachers do for their students.

Who would be a good candidate for this internship in the future? What qualities/skills/interests are important to have?: I think the best candidate for this internship would be anyone planning to become a teacher themselves. I am majoring in secondary education on a life science track next year so I knew this would be the perfect internship for me. It is a great way to pre-expose yourself to what your day to day life would be like. I would say that confidence, communication, and patience are necessary qualities for this internship.

Any last thoughts or reflections about your internship you want to share?: Overall, this past month has been a really positive experience for me, and I would highly recommend it to anyone that is considering becoming a teacher too!

Lafayette Avenue School- Emma Battiato

1. Emma Battiato
2. I interned at Lafayette Avenue School, with my fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Marshall. I was a student here, myself in the 2013-2014 school year.
3. My internship experience was Fun and super engaging.
4. During my internship, I worked with fourth grade students, and helped out with many things. From walking the kids to elective classes, grading homework, to helping out with lessons, it was so much fun to get to know the kids and see what it's like to be in the classroom as an older student, and to see how different things are here from the high school.
5. CHS helped me prepare for my internship by making sure I stayed on top of my assignments, always handed in my work, and was accountable for my actions and attendance.
6. The thing I loved most about my internship was getting to spend time with my own fourth grade teachers and being able to witness what fourth grade is like as a student that has already gone through that year, but more than five years later. It was interesting to see how things have both changed and stayed the same in the school as a whole, but also in individual classrooms. It was also a lot of fun to be like one of the teachers for a few weeks.
7. Someone who likes children, works well with others, and is interested in helping others learn would be really great for this position. Considering the kids are only 9 or so years old, sometimes they can get a little rowdy, but you have to be able to just laugh it off and move on. In the end, it is so much fun to be a part of lessons, get to know each student, and also get to see teachers that I haven't seen in a while again!
Overall, I had such a great experience working with Mrs. Marshall at Lafayette Avenue School, and I wish I could’ve stayed longer!

Mariner Wealth - Meghan Sabin

My name is: Meghan Sabin

I interned at: Mariner Wealth Advisors

My internship experience was (one or more words to describe it): incredible and I believe it has really helped prepare me for work in the future.

Describe your role and responsibilities during your internship: I had many different responsibilities during the four weeks of my internship. The first week was more of a learning week for me where I would read through articles about the market and the economy and I learned how to navigate the software programs they use here at Mariner such as eMoney, Orion, and Salesforce. After I learned the basics, I would help out by running reports on Orion, organizing the information from those reports on an excel spreadsheet, updating clients’ financial information in eMoney, and scanning and filing documents from Fidelity and Schwab. I was also given the opportunity to experiment with the financial planning software they use by building the foundation of a financial plan for an imaginary couple. I later used the information I learned from this exercise to help update my parent’s financial plan.

Describe how you think CHS prepared you for your internship: I would have been completely lost at this internship if it weren’t for the AP Economics and financial literacy courses offered at Chatham High School. There were a lot of things I had to learn about financial planning during my first week of internship, but those classes provided me with a solid foundation of information that made it easier to learn the more intricate details of the finance world.

What did you love about your internship OR what is most memorable about your experience? One of the things I loved most about my internship was how professional and important I felt while working there. It is one of the only things I have ever participated in that I believe will help prepare me for a career in the future. I have never worked in an office setting before nor have I spent so much time on a computer, but this internship at Mariner gave me experience with both. Every day I interned here, I felt like I was doing something meaningful which was extremely validating. In addition to the experience itself, I also really loved the people I had the pleasure of meeting. Everybody was so incredibly kind and welcoming, and I’m going to miss seeing these people in the office every day.

Who would be a good candidate for this internship in the future? What qualities/skills/interests are important to have? In order to achieve success and enjoyment from an internship at Mariner, you must be practical, detail-oriented, willing to learn, and good with excel spreadsheets. Additionally, it is important to be passionate about finance and financial planning or to at least have some interest in the subject. Some of the work that needs to be completed here is tedious and not the most thrilling, but if you enjoy the subject material, it can be really cool and interesting.

My name is Matt Gorman.

B: I interned at Southern Boulevard School.

C: My internship experience was interesting and fun.

D: During my internship, my role was mainly a teacher's aid and my responsibilities included helping students with work, making copies and printing papers for the teacher, leading the students to and from different classes, and sometimes staying with them during their specials to provide support.

E: CHS prepared me for this internship through the early childhood development class. In that class, we learned how young children, including school age children, developed socially, physically, and mentally. During the last days of that class, I went to SBS to observe the same class I would intern with. Those observation days prepared me for what the class would be like and how the students would behave.

F: The thing I loved the most about my internship was the bond I made with some of the students. The students liked me and they would always chat with me during their snack break and ask me questions about high school and even some silly questions like who my crush was and if I was 9 feet tall.

G: Skills that are important to have for an internship in an elementary school are patience, the ability to follow directions, and the ability to communicate if something changes. I think that anyone with these skills that is interested in elementary education would be a good candidate for this type of internship.

Because I hadn’t been confined to just classes with seniors, I learned a lot about younger students and made friends with some of them. This made it easy to speak to middle schoolers in a similar way. In addition, CHS has really helped me with organization throughout my time there, and I was able to use those lessons to organize costumes during my time here.

What did you love about your internship OR what is most memorable about your experience?: The most memorable part was seeing all the classes perform the plays they’d been working on for the past month.

Who would be a good candidate for this internship in the future? What qualities/skills/interests are important to have?: A good candidate for this internship would be someone who likes making relationships and connections. It’s important for future interns to be kind and understanding.

The Shakespeare Theater of New Jersey - Dash Green

My name is: Dashiell Green

I interned at: The Shakespeare Theater of New Jersy

My internship experiences was (one or more words to describe it): amazing, informative, and fun.

Describe your role and responsibilities during your internship: The first week my role was very administrative, as I spent a good deal of my time in the office doing administrative work. This included reading 3 plays, creating a glossary for Macbeth, and creating a viewer's guide for Enchanted April by researching and finding articles and images relevant to the play. However, weeks 2, 3, and 4 were very different, as I spent a to of my time loading the set into the vans, loading it into the theater, putting the set up, hanging the lights, taking apart the outdoor stage, cleaning the theater and the shop, and doing many more tasks that a stagehand might do.

Describe how you think CHS prepared you for your internship: CHS prepared me for this internship through all of the group projects that I did, as it helped me work in groups and to be a problem solver. Most of the work I did was in a group, so being able to work with other people is very important. Also, the head of the technical theater department had a health emergency and has been out for 2 weeks, so many of the things we did we had to do without him, which was very scary as he is the one who knows exactly what to do and such.

What did you love about your internship OR what is most memorable about your experience? The thing I loved the most was the people I worked with. I loved working with so many interesting and different people who had so many funny and cool stories and who were so helpful and understanding. I will miss them and they are so awesome.

Who would be a good candidate for this internship in the future? What qualities/skills/interests are important to have? A good candidate is someone who loves theater, as you will be spending most of your time reading plays, hanging around a theater, and talking to people who love theater about theater. Also, you need to be hard-working, responsible, on time, respectful, and you need to be open to doing a little bit of everything.

Any last thoughts or reflections about your internship you want to share? (if not, do not include in your video) It was an amazing time and I made some great memories so I hope someone does this internship in the future. Also, you will make some great connections that you can definitely use in the professional theater world.

Me and my fellow intern would help the kids work on their class projects which involve cooking and making presentations. We helped with the milton field day. We also had smaller responsibilities like hanging posters, folding programs for the talent show, and helping with other small tasks.

Describe how you think CHS prepared you for your internship: CHS prepared for this internship in many ways. My teachers gave me a great example of teaching techniques that involved how to teach a class and how to be patient. I also took cooking classes at CHS that helped me in the kitchen at CMS.

What did you love about your internship OR what is most memorable about your experience: What was most memorable about my internship was the connections I made with the students. This included coming up with ideas and mounting them on paper. I helped my mentor, Mrs. Keeshen run errands, give back artwork, and hang projects up.

Describe how you think CHS prepared you for your internship: Chatham High School prepared me by teaching me how to work well with others. I also was confident to spread my ideas and demonstrate how to complete projects. I also took art classes at the high school, so I knew what the next level was like.

What did you love about your internship OR what is most memorable about your experience? I love the connections I made at the middle school. I was able to see a lot of my middle school teachers during lunch and prep periods. And I really enjoyed talking with the students, specifically the 8th graders to give them advice about high school. The most memorable experience from my internship was setting up for the district art show. It was a lot of work but together we were able to accomplish the task.

Who would be a good candidate for this internship in the future? What qualities/skills/interests are important to have? Someone who is hard-working, flexible, social, and independent would be a good candidate for this internship. I had days where I interacted with my supervisor for the majority of my day, and other times I’d be working on my own projects for a while. I did hands-on work as well as work on my computer. As long as you can be versatile with your working habits, this would be a great opportunity.

Washington Avenue School - Grace Tortorella

My name is: Grace Tortorella

I interned at Washington Avenue School in Mrs.Kressler’s kindergarten class.

My internship experience was unique and incredible.

My main role throughout my internship was to be of help to the students whenever they needed something. Whether they were falling behind the group during guided classwork, struggling to read a word, or even just needed something silly like a band-aid, I was able to be an extra resource for the students. I was also able to aid Mrs.Kressler and her para Mrs.Cody with tasks such as the bulletin boards, read-alouds in class, and making copies.

I think CHS prepared me for my internship in two ways. One is it helped me learn how to develop connections and communicate with others which was helpful when I met so many new people. The second was through my early childhood development class with Ms.Schmitter because prior to my internship I was able to make three visits to Washington Ave and visit Ms.Finn’s kindergarten class. This gave me a head start to my internship and made me more comfortable once I arrived at Mrs.Kressler's room.

What I loved most about my internship was my connections with the students. I really was able to get to know all twenty of them individually over my time there. On my last day the students surprised me with cards which they each came over to read to me. This was very special to me and made me feel like I had impacted them in some way and had done a good job with my time there.

I believe anyone with an interest in teaching or who enjoys working with children would be a good candidate for this internship. This internship requires patience and structure in addition to the ability to go with the flow and allow the children to be themselves.

This was an incredible opportunity that reassured my intentions of wanting to be a teacher and I’m incredibly thankful that I had the opportunity to spend time on Washington Ave.

My name is: Tessa Powers

I interned at: Saint Hubert's Animal Welfare Center

My internship experiences was (one or more words to describe it): exciting, fun, and educational.

Describe your role and responsibilities during your internship: During the internship, my role was to clean out animal cages, which included guinea pigs, cats, dogs, and rabbits, sweep and mop the floors of the shelter, complete laundry, create enrichment treats for the cats and dogs, and socialize with the animals.

Describe how you think CHS prepared you for your internship: Throughout the duration of my internship, I had to be able to detect and report problems related to animal health, and CHS prepared me so that I was able to effectively communicate any issue that cropped up.

What did you love about your internship OR what is most memorable about your experience? I would say that the most memorable events about my experience would have to be being able to socialize the kittens. They would come in scared of people, but when you spent enough time with them you would get to see them become comfortable and even affectionate around humans.

Who would be a good candidate for this internship in the future? What qualities/skills/interests are important to have? For this internship, I would say a good candidate would be someone who is interested in a career involving animals, or someone who simply enjoys the company of animals. Qualities and skills that are important to have include patience, a sense of calmness, and the ability to be an effective communicator.

Any last thoughts or reflections about your internship you want to share? (if not, do not include in your video) I had such a good time completing this internship, and I definitely recommend it for anyone who enjoys animals and is able to complete tasks independently. I learned so much in such a short period of time, and I am really happy to have been a part of this experience!

I read a story every day to the students and taught a portion of the class called “calendar”, where we went over the date and weather that day.

Describe how you think CHS prepared you for your internship: CHS prepared me for my internship by giving me the perspective of a student. I have never been a teacher before, so while I was at Gingham, I was able to understand why sometimes students were not motivated to do their work, and I could use my experience as a student to try to get the best out of them.

What did you love about your internship OR what is most memorable about your experience?

I loved all of the people at Gingham Giraffe. From the very first day, the teachers in my classroom were welcoming and made me feel like one of them. The students were such great kids and I loved getting to know them and hang out with them everyday.
7. Who would be a good candidate for this internship in the future? What qualities/skills/interests are important to have?

To do this internship, you definitely need to have some patience and communication skills. Some days, the kids just don’t want to do anything and you have to understand that they are young kids and they won’t do anything they don’t want to. I learned that you have to be a strong communicator to make them understand why they need to focus and complete their work, so individuals with these skills would be perfect for this internship.
8. Any last thoughts or reflections about your internship you want to share? During the internship, I had the opportunity to work on the register, help with some online orders, and make an online order to add more objects to the store. In the last week of the internship, I started helping customers with their questions.

Describe how you think CHS prepared you for your internship: CHS prepared me on how to be organized, time management, and how talk to different people.

What did you love about your internship OR what is most memorable about your experience? I loved this internship because I had the opportunity to learn how a retail store works, because before I thought that it was easier to be a retail store, but after the internship working in a retail store is not as easy as I thought.

Who would be a good candidate for this internship in the future? What qualities/skills/interests are important to have? I believe that I good candidate for this internship in the future would be a person that likes dealing with different types of customers, some really nice customers and others that just want to get out of the store as fast as possible. Also needs to be a person that is organized, because if it is not organized the store would be a mess, and it would be hard for customers to find what they need.

The first photo is the entry of the store , and where I would begin my day, and the second photo is a me doing up a ladder doing upstock for seeds and we can see the size of the store and how each isle are organized.

I am Marianna Zingone!

I interned at Contain Yourself Gardening!

My internship was so much fun!

My responsibilities during my internship were to act as Mrs. Peebles extra set of hands! Typically we helped pack/unpack her truck with plants for the day! Then, we would unpack flowers at the client’s house and move plants into their relative location. After, we would pull out old plants/arrangements and prep pots for planting. Later, we would clean up and water the arrangements. By the last few weeks, we were also planting arrangements on our own!

The flower arrangements may be totally glamorous (however, for the most part, the steps to get there may be less so)! Chatham may have not “taught” me how to garden, but it has definitely taught me the attitude needed to garden! Flexibility, out of the box thinking, and an open mind are all things I learned during my time at Chatham that have allowed me to not bat an eye when approached with carrying a heavy, soaking-wet bag of soil or when an ant colony is unearthed in a pot!

I loved that my internship was always changing and that everyday was a new adventure! I got to visit a lot of cool places (a penthouse in Jersey City or the Weichert Estate to name a few!) and meet many new (very nice) people! Plus, the plants and flowers were gorgeous!

Anyone who loves being outside and isn’t afraid to get their hands dirty would be perfect for this internship! Also, anyone who doesn’t mind lifting heavy plants or bags of soil and who isn’t afraid of bugs would also be a perfect fit!

I had such a fun time at Contain Yourself! Mrs. Peebles is an awesome boss (and her dog Hazel too :) )!

Milton Avenue School- Kylie McGlynn

My name is: Kylie McGlynn

I interned at: Milton Avenue School with Mr.V as a physical education and health teacher

My internship experiences was (one or more words to describe it): Very rewarding and exciting

Describe your role and responsibilities during your internship: During the 4 weeks, I helped Mr. V set up activities for the students, supervised them, and played games with them. When I was in the health classroom, I helped with activities, distributed papers, and checked the students’ work. The end of the school year came with bonus activities such as field day and the Milton Mile. I worked the 🤬 station on Field Day and helped figure out a course for the mile.

Describe how you think CHS prepared me by helping me create bonds and connections between the students and myself. At the high school, I’ve created connections with teachers, so being the teacher at Milton helped switch the roles, High school itself helped shape me into a more punctual student which in turn benefitted me with time management at work, as well as making me a more communicative person which is essential for working with younger students.

What did you love about your internship OR what is most memorable about your experience?: I loved the connections that were made between the students and myself. It was rewarding to see them start to trust me and take interest in my life. For example, I had students draw things for me in health class and would ask me about my ongoing lacrosse season. Just being back at Milton one last time and seeing the same teachers that I used to have 10 years before was so fun.

Who would be a good candidate for this internship in the future? What qualities/skills/interests are important to have?: Definitely someone with a lot of patience, communication skills, enthusiasm, and listening skills. As much as I was helping Mr. V, I was also helping the students too. It was important to have patience with them because they are much younger than us and to fully hear and listen to them when they had questions or just comments. It is important to make personal connections or similarities with the kids because I found that that’s something they do very often. To take part in this specific internship, you would need to be interested in sports/physical education, as we were constantly playing games and working on strength.

Any last thoughts or reflections about your internship you want to share? (if not, do not include in your video): The senior internship program was a great learning experience and definitely rewarding. I wouldn’t have wanted to end my senior year any other way.

1. My name is: KYLIE FINKELSTEIN

2. I interned at: Southern Boulevard School with the school nurse

3. My internship experience was (one or more words to describe it): very rewarding. I looked forward to seeing the children each day and they are very cute.

4. Describe your role and responsibilities during your internship: I helped with the charting and I also assessed many of the students. When there were a ton of children in the room, my boss and I would tag-team and each take half of the kids to make it as efficient as possible.

5. Describe how you think CHS prepared you for your internship: I think CHS prepared me well. CHS taught me how to talk to the children and the teachers. It is very important to know how to hold a conversation with people and I think CHS helped me with that. I also think CHS taught me how to have a good work ethic. I always was asking for more things to do and trying my hardest in each and everything that I completed.

6. What did you love about your internship OR what is most memorable about your experience? Talking to the kids and being able to help them when they were at their lows was very memorable. Some of these children just needed some love since they most likely did not get that at home, and it was adorable when they perked up and all a sudden felt better. Taking care of their wounds and giving them reassurance are equally important in my opinion.

7. Who would be a good candidate for this internship in the future? What qualities/skills/interests are important to have? A student who has a passion for working with children and wants to maybe go into medicine. They need to be caring and have a lot of patience. It is extremely fun though and an amazing place to intern.

8. Any last thoughts or reflections about your internship you want to share?

My name is: Gisele Urashima

I interned at: Southern Boulevard School and Milton Avenue School with Mrs. Forte (ESL teacher)

My internship experience was (one or more words to describe it): gratifying and eye-opening because I was a part of the kids’ developmental and acclimation process, and I also met kids with different backgrounds.

Describe your role and responsibilities during your internship: My main role was to assist Mrs. Forte, but I also organized books in the library and helped the Design and Technology teacher when my mentor was absent. At the beginning, I would just observe my mentor and help out the kids with spelling out words, getting them to talk more, and brainstorming ideas for a story. As I got more acquainted with them and knew their individual needs and interests, I was able to plan out lessons and activities based on that. Lessons varied from playing Simon Says with the kindergarteners at Milton Avenue to writing my own story as a sample for second graders, creating word searches and crossword puzzles, and coming up with a listening activity for the first graders.

Describe how you think CHS prepared you for your internship: By taking AP classes, I learned the value of staying on top of everything and how it all pays off in the end. At my internship, whenever I was asked to complete something, I would have it done as soon as possible. During my time at CHS, I also improved my organization skills by using all the resources available on Google Drive; with that, I was able to create easy-to-read lesson plans and share folders for the kids with Mrs. Forte.

What did you love about your internship OR what is most memorable about your experience? The relationship I built with Mrs. Forte and the kids is the most memorable part about my experience. In between classes, she would share her past experiences with me, what it took her to get to where she is now, and any information that she thought would be useful for me to know about her students. She always emphasized the importance of speaking one’s native language at home to maintain fluency in more than one language, and that value really stuck with me. I was delighted to see how fast the kids got comfortable with me and opened up to me that even the quietest one let his shyness aside when I was around. I loved getting to know each and every one of them because of their different personalities and cultures. They also never failed to put a smile on my face or make me laugh; they would always have something to amaze me with. At the end, it was very hard to say bye, knowing that I wouldn’t see them everyday anymore.

Who would be a good candidate for this internship in the future? What qualities/skills/interests are important to have? Someone who is diligent, open-minded, curious, empathetic, patient, proactive, and adaptable would be a great candidate for this internship in the future. The person needs to be willing to learn about other cultures and understand that everyone is different. Working with kids whose first language isn’t English can sometimes be a challenge, but you need to be patient and understand that they’re trying their best to communicate with you. You’ll also never know what they have been through to get to America, so that is also something to consider when you’re interacting with them.

Any last thoughts or reflections about your internship you want to share? (if not, do not include in your video) I’d recommend this internship to anyone who is interested in going into the education field and is passionate about learning about the world.

My name is: Angela Imanuel

I interned at: The Library of the Chathams

My internship experience was (one or more words to describe it): Wonderful and fun!

Describe your role and responsibilities during your internship: Most of my duties were located at the main desk of the library. I would receive patrons and check in or out books. I also answered the phone, issued new library cards when needed, and cleared the book drop whenever it was full. Other tasks that occurred behind the scenes include unpacking and checking in book deliveries from other libraries (100+ books per day!), shelving new books, and other miscellaneous jobs.

Describe how you think CHS prepared you for your internship: Being able to handle a variety of people, whether they’re compliant or difficult, is something CHS has taught me well.

What did you love about your internship OR what is most memorable about your experience? I loved how welcoming and friendly everyone was at the library. I immediately felt like a part of their staff community and got to know them throughout my time working there. They never hesitated to help and guide me through questions and problems, and I’m very grateful I was able to work with such an amazing group of people!

Who would be a good candidate for this internship in the future? What qualities/skills/interests are important to have? You definitely need to have good social skills. Throughout the day, you’ll be interacting with people of varying ages and temperaments, so not everyone will be patient and kind. You also need to work well with other staff members and be open to doing any task you’ll be asked to perform.

Any last thoughts or reflections about your internship you want to share? (if not, do not include in your video) Before going into this internship, I thought a job at the library would be more calm, something that will allow me to wind down from the stress of school while helping out in a community at the same time. However, my preconceptions were wrong. There’s so much more work going on behind the scenes of the front desk, and it definitely is not laid back at all, BUT I enjoyed it very much nonetheless and had a lot of fun interning there! So the next time you walk into the library, please be kind to the staff and appreciate them, as the few seconds we see them working is not representative of how much effort and time they actually put into their jobs.

1. My name is: Cate Eigen

2. I interned at: Washington Avenue School in the Resource Room with Mrs. Taylor, a special education teacher for 2nd and 3rd graders.

3. My internship experiences was (one or more words to describe it): educational because I learned a lot during my internship about working with kids and being a teacher. I would also describe it as personal because the Resource Room is a small and close-knit community which allowed me to make relationships with the students and teachers quickly.

4. Describe your role and responsibilities during your internship: I assisted the kids in math and ELA work. I worked in small groups with the kids: reading, playing games, and doing whatever they and Mrs. Taylor needed help with.

5. Describe how you think CHS prepared you for your internship: The high school has taught me to stay organized and work well with others, both of which are essential skills to have while working in a school. I have also learned from informally observing my teachers during school—without even realizing—and picking up on what works in the classroom.

6. What did you love about your internship OR what is most memorable about your experience? I loved working and forming relationships with the kids during my internship. Kids are open about their appreciation and it is obvious when they are having fun, so being able to help them is very rewarding. I was also able to see them grow and learn so much, even though I was only there for four weeks.

7. Who would be a good candidate for this internship in the future? What qualities/skills/interests are important to have? People who want to work with kids in the future would be good candidates for this internship. It is important to be interested in helping the students grow because the teachers will want you to work in small groups and form relationships with the kids.

When I first got there, CMS was 2 weeks out from the 8th grade DC trip and she had so much that needed to be done. I basically did a large amount of the DC work so she was able to care for the other students. I put together bags for every bus, packed backpacks for every chaperone, packed and organized each first aid kit, and went out and bought the supplies needed for the big nurse’s bag. I packed the sinch sacks full of epipens and inhalers and medicine that was needed on a daily basis. I also helped Nurse Butler go through each individual person’s medicine and make sure that they packed the correct medication, the correct amount of medication, and specified what time of day they needed to take it. After the DC trip, I helped Nurse Butler organize the supply closet and helped the kids who came into the nurse’s office.

Describe how you think CHS prepared you for your internship: CHS taught me how to not wait around but rather step up without being asked and start helping out with things around me that clearly need to be done while someone else is busy.

What did you love about your internship OR what is most memorable about your experience?

As much as I loved meeting new people and helping others when they were sick or injured, I most loved working with Nurse Butler. Ever since middle school, she has been one of my biggest role models and greatly helped me realize that I want to go into the nursing field. She showed me what a great nurse looks like, and I will always remember the composure she showed when crazy situations occurred.

Who would be a good candidate for this internship in the future?

My name is Jasmine Lewin

I interned with Mrs. Hull and the CHS art department.

My internship experience was enjoyable and creative inducing as it allowed us to help out with artistic things and even experiment with upcoming art projects for the students.

Describe your role and responsibilities during your internship:

My role during my internship was to help out the art teachers. I had responsibilities like helping set up the art show, framing artworks, organizing the art room, and sorting through materials for next year. The majority of my role at my internship was directed towards the district art show as we had to collect the pieces, set up the display boards, and work out the placement of the pieces to highlight the artworks.

Describe how you think CHS prepared you for your internship:

CHS prepared me for my internship by teaching me both artistic skills which I was able to use during the internship while also teaching me skills of flexibility as we did very different tasks everyday. It also prepared me by even just letting me take many art classes which helped me get to know the art teachers themselves and the way around the art room.

What did you love about your internship OR what is most memorable about your experience?

What I loved about my internship was being able to set up the art show and see all the artworks from so many different grade levels. A memorable moment was during that art show when you could see all the families of the artists come in and admire the works.

Who would be a good candidate for this internship in the future? What qualities/skills/interests are important to have?

A good candidate for this internship in the future would be someone who enjoys art and organizing. I also had a project to clean out and organize old charts that were in the office.

Describe how you think CHS prepared you for your internship:

I think Che prepared me for my internship because the teachers have really helped with showing how to advocate for yourself to an adult. CHS also helped with being patient with certain tasks you have to complete.

What did you love about your internship OR what is most memorable about your experience?

I loved the patients, they made work so much fun. Part of what made my internship work so well is that I was willing to help the teachers in any capacity in order to become a part of their class and helpful to them. CHS always teaches their students the importance of searching for opportunities instead of waiting for them to come to you.

What did you love about your internship OR what is most memorable about your experience?

I loved getting to know all of the students and teachers, and I am so lucky to have been a part of their classroom family.
New Jersey Youth Symphony - Jack Foley

My name is: Jack Foley

I interned at: New Jersey Youth Symphony (NJYS)

My internship experience was (one or more words to describe it): informative and pragmatic because the skills I learned were not just applicable to the field of classical music but to any type of job.

Describe your role and responsibilities during your internship: I mainly helped with the audition process for NJYS which included greeting students at the door, making sure they were prepared/had all the right materials, walked them to a practice room, comforted them, and then walked them to their auditions. With the audition process, I had to then organize the scores by adding together the component parts then upload them to the scores database so that the NJYS staff could then make a decision on the right ensemble for a student. I also worked in their music library, which was my favorite place, and this included responsibilities such as organizing and copying music from the previous and upcoming seasons.

Describe how you think CHS prepared you for your internship: CHS prepared me well by having a lot of the classes be interactive with other students and people in general, whether this be group projects or class discussions because a lot of my internship required me to work well with other people and have the social skills to make sure the auditions run smoothly.

What did you love about your internship OR what is most memorable about your experience? I loved working in the music library because I am a big fan of classical music at heart, so being able to look at the plethora of music was a really fun time. I also found the process of copying therapeutic and cathartic; plus, I could have a fun time listening to music as I did it.

Who would be a good candidate for this internship in the future? What qualities/skills/interests are important to have? An ideal candidate for this internship would be someone who has a background in music, especially of an orchestra. This helps a lot with the music library because anyone who works there should know how to read music to make sure the copying goes well. Another skill that is important is good social skills because everyone who is helping out with auditions wants to make sure that all auditionees feel welcome and calm in our facility, and we want to make sure that the process runs smoothly.

Any last thoughts or reflections about your internship you want to share? I will say that the hours are not great for this internship because a lot of the time they will be in the afternoon/evening depending on the day, so anyone who may want to check this out should feel comfortable with those types of hours. I will say it was also great because I got to sleep in everyday, a rare luxury that I was almost never afforded at CHS.

My name is: Ruth du Plessis

I interned at: Mrs. Steigerwald’s Kindergarten classroom at Milton Avenue School in Chatham

My internship experiences was: eye-opening because I want to go into child psychology but when I was looking for an internship, all private practices were virtual because of COVID. I figured the next best thing would be to work with kids in that age group. After my experience in a classroom, education is definitely more on my horizon than it was previously.

Describe your role and responsibilities during your internship: helping with administrative tasks around the classroom, ran math and reading centers, helped students with writing projects, did read-alouds.

Describe how you think CHS prepared you for your internship: CHS helped me prepare for my internship by teaching collaboration and communication. These were skills that I was able to encourage in the kindergarten students. Additionally, the AP Psychology class offered at Chatham High School gave me background knowledge on the developmental stages and milestones at this age. It was interesting for me to observe how COVID may have impacted a child’s social and educational development.

What did you love about your internship OR what is most memorable about your experience? My most memorable moments were the ones spent with the students. During indoor recess one day one student did not have anyone to play with so he asked me to play and I had such a good time talking to him.

Who would be a good candidate for this internship in the future? What qualities/skills/interests are important to have? The best person for this internship in the future is someone who likes kids, is confident in front of people, and is organized.

I had a very positive experience interning at Milton and I would definitely recommend it to future interns!

CHS Physics - Risha Surana

1. My name is Risha Surana.

2. I interned at the Physics Department at Chatham High School with Mr. Bandel.

3. My internship experience was fun and engaging.

4. My roles and responsibilities included grading final projects, setting up labs and demos, and helping out the four teachers with whatever they needed. I also started a project to organize the physics classrooms and prep room which was really fun because I got to test different equipment. One task included sorting over a thousand small resistors based on band colors. Another task included looking through old student projects and deciding which ones were the best to keep for future years.

5. CHS helped prepare me for this internship by offering the ability to be a lab assistant during the year, so I had a lot of the skills that I needed to do well during the longer internship. This including knowing how to post grades on Genesis and being familiar with the classroom set up. Also, taking design and technology classes at CHS were helpful, because I could assist students with their final Conquer the Hill project and could use the band saws and drill presses in the tech room to cut pegboard for student projects.

6. What was most memorable about my experience was finally being able to see the behind-the-scenes of all the demos that I had seen while taking physics during my sophomore and junior year. I also got to see a lot of demonstrations that I didn’t see before, such as a pencil launcher to study friction or a set of pendulums to study waves. While I definitely wasn’t the best physics student in high school, I’ve grown to really love the subject now that I’ve been able to see it from a teacher’s perspective.

7. A good candidate for this internship would be someone who enjoyed taking physics at CHS. It’s important to be a self-starter, communicative, and responsible. You also have to enjoy organizing a lot.

8. Overall, I really enjoyed my internship. It went by really fast, and I’ll be coming back during the last week of school to help run the tournaments for the final project!

Chatham Borough Hall - Amelia Willmann

My name is Amelia Willmann.

I interned at Chatham Borough Hall.

My internship experience was memorable.

I had a lot of roles and responsibilities at my internship. I interned for the administrative assistant, so I assisted with anything and everything. I worked on the Chatham Boro website, and made online posters that were sent out to the Chatham community. I helped with the Block & Lot project, which was organizing and filing papers based on the block and lots assigned to the properties within Chatham. Additionally, I helped with the financial spreadsheets, block & lot spreadsheets, and public record paperwork spreadsheets. I learned how to search for blocks & lots and the process of approving permits. One of the cooler tasks I was given was when I got to explore the archive room and look through old papers to find specific finance paperwork needed for a meeting. I also organized all of the important boro paperwork from previous years into a binder.

CHS prepared me for my internship by exposing me to essential work and life skills. Through many group projects, I learned how to work as a team and communicate effectively. The high school is fast-paced and has challenging classes, so you have to stay organized. These organizational skills assisted me when working for the borough. CHS also taught me how to problem solve. There were many scenarios in the borough when something didn’t fit a category, and there were many unique situations. I was prepared to brainstorm solutions to various problems and ways to handle situations. Furthermore, CHS also exposed me to spreadsheets and how to use them to organize information. This made it much easier when I was tasked with using spreadsheets to organize unfamiliar data.

At my internship, I loved the work environment. Not only was it welcoming, but I was included in the conversations and felt accepted. Although it can be a very stressful and time-sensitive job, the employees at the internship were amazing people. They balanced their work and prioritized their relationships with other employees. It was a community of people working to serve the Chatham community, and I enjoyed being a part of such a fun group of people.

A good candidate for this internship is someone who is curious and interested in learning. There were a lot of opportunities to learn about municipal government. Every timeI was asked to complete a task, the activity and importance of it was explained to me. Questions were encouraged, and I certainly learned a lot about the behind-the-scenes work I previously took for granted. The most important skill needed at this internship site was communication. Of course, communication skills are always important, but, at the Borough, everyone’s job relies on another. The responsibilities between employees are intertwined, so, to complete tasks, you have to be able to work together and effectively communicate your thoughts.

In between classes, I would clean the studio floors, organize the yoga blocks, and take out trash as necessary. I also had the opportunity to work with Michael Simpson, the head of marketing and social media for Powerflow. I got to work on various projects and learn more about how good marketing affects the success of a business.

Describe how you think CHS prepared you for your internship: CHS prepared me by helping me develop necessary communication, problem solving, and organizational skills needed for this internship.

What did you love about your internship OR what is most memorable about your experience?
Jag-ONE Physical Therapy - Azra Ozan

1. My name is: Azra Ozan

2. I interned at: Jag-One Physical Therapy

3. My internship experiences was (one or more words to describe it): informational and filled with hands on opportunities. The Physical Therapist described his full time experience as ‘Thought Provoking’ which I also wanted to include.

4. Describe your role and responsibilities during your internship:

My roles and responsibilities during my internship consisted of helping my mentor and essentially observing what he does throughout the day. I usually also helped the aides with their jobs such as doing the laundry, putting away equipment, and giving patients ice/heating devices. My favorite responsibility was of course getting to interact with the patients, and since my internship was a very hands-on experience, I got to do this quite a lot. It was especially very interesting to learn about everyone's different personalities and backstories.

5. Describe how you think CHS prepared you for your internship:

I do think that CHS prepared me for my internship because in school every teacher made us do group projects and interact with our peers/classmates very often which helped me build up a lot of confidence, and that level of interaction really prepared me to be much more comfortable talking to patients who I did not know, it felt very natural.

6. What did you love about your internship OR what is most memorable about your experience?

As I stated, my favorite aspects of my internship were how hands-on and interactive it was! I got to interact with so many patients, and my favorite story of one of the patients was actually when they told me they were a pediatric neurologist, which is the field I want to go into, and they answered so many of my questions about the career itself. So getting to learn from not only my mentors but also the patients were extremely interesting! A funny memory was when the entire therapy center was trying to solve riddles together, which will always make me laugh because some of them were so frustrating, which just made it hilarious to see everyone trying to work together to solve them.

7. Who would be a good candidate for this internship in the future? What qualities/skills/interests are important to have?

A good candidate for this internship in the future would be anyone who wants to go into the medical field and has an interest in this major (which is Physical Therapy). To specifically quote my mentor, qualities or skills that are important to have is that a person needs to know how to work with people, with coworkers, and in this specific case, patients. Skills that are important to have as an employed person consist of being a people person in this field, because you are interacting with so many people on a day-to-day basis, you need to know how to communicate with them), and have active listening skills. You also need to be committed to your work, as it should be something you are interested in. Finally, you obviously need to stick by the ethical rules of the field itself, which is probably the most important aspect.

My name is: Bella Falkenberg

I interned at: The Chatham Borough Municipality with the Finance Department

My internship experiences was: engaging and enjoyable.

Describe your role and responsibilities during your internship: To help the finance department I put the Borough’s revenues and expenses over the last 10 years into a spreadsheet and graphed the trends. I also helped put other information into spreadsheets such as general information for OPRAs and construction application forms as well as organizing some of these forms into different folders. I also helped with filing. This included filing the block and lots, tax records, and printing labels.

Describe how you think CHS prepared you for your internship: A lot of the work I did involved using google sheets, which I have experience using due to some of the assignments I completed at CHS. There was a specific project I did last year on data analysis that explored the different features in google sheets used to track trends in data. These skills were specifically useful in tracking data for the borough’s revenues and expenses and observing their trends in the last 10 years.

What did you love about your internship OR what is most memorable about your experience? I loved being able to work with different people and do different tasks with different departments. This allowed me to experience multiple aspects of working in government.

Who would be a good candidate for this internship in the future? What qualities/skills/interests are important to have? Those who are motivated to work and flexible to work on any task they are given. During this internship I found it was important for the interns to help each other on their tasks, which could not have happened if we were not looking for opportunities to contribute. Anyone who is interested in finance, government, or even just the basics of running a business would enjoy this internship.

After school, we would help with some of the first aid responsibilities that the school athletes require
5. CHS serves as a background for the information we need in our professional lives. It's always exciting to see and learn what you've been taught in class being applied in the real world. Whenever Dre asked us to research a thing or two, it was relieving to draw from my experience and supplement my research with information I already know.
6. What I loved most about my internship was going to the girls lacrosse games to help. While getting useful information about how to splint patients or learning how to use a tourniquet, I also got to enjoy the last games the girls played. Seeing how Dre bonded with these kids and supported them both with their health and emotionally was really inspiring!
7. Students looking to learn more about athletic training would be perfect for this internship. As a student looking to enter the medical field, I also really benefited from this experience. I think that it's important to have an open mind and an strong desire to learn. It's also important to be a good listener and really interested in getting to know the kids that come in.
8. I came into this internship a little bit confused on what direction I wanted to go in for careers. What I came out learning was that my interest in medicine is something I want to pursue, and I'm really grateful to have been given this opportunity in these last four weeks.

My name is Owen McClintock

I interned at the Madison Area YMCA

My internship experiences were exciting and provided me with new ways to grow.

Describe your role and responsibilities during your internship:
During my internship, the other interns and I took on a multitude of responsibilities ranging from member integration, to leading classes, to organizing files, and even to simply decorating the Y.

Describe how you think CHS prepared you for your internship:
Being a student at CHS has taught me more than just how to succeed in the classroom, it has taught me how to be personable with all sorts of people who I may be unfamiliar with. This was a skill that helped a lot during my internship at the Y because I was constantly meeting and working with new people.

What did you love about your internship OR what is most memorable about your experience?
My most memorable part of the internship was being asked to play pickleball with the usual group of pickle enthusiasts. One or two days every week we would help out the sports department and assist in setting up for pickleball and checking everyone in. One day, the members asked me to play with them, and I did. Even though they were all over 50 years old, they still beat me by a landslide but it was an extremely fun experience.

Who would be a good candidate for this internship in the future? What qualities/skills/interests are important to have?
I would say that in the future anyone who is personable and willing to be patient to help out people would be a good candidate for this internship.

Any last thoughts or reflections about your internship you want to share? (if not, do not include in your video)
Overall I had a lot of fun at the YMCA during my internship and I also was forced to grow and learn along the way.

1. My name is: Charlie Hilsenrath
2. I interned at: Washington Avenue School
3. My internship experiences was (one or more words to describe it): Enlightening and delightful
4. Describe your role and responsibilities during your internship: At my internship, I had many responsibilities. I was responsible for grading a lot of work and tests that the kids took, as well as making copies of materials for the teacher, Ms.Stevens. I also helped put up and take down children's works and other classroom posters and materials. As well as that, I did a lot of connecting with students and helping them with their work. I would walk around the classroom and help answer questions and clarify lessons. I also traveled with the class and acted as an aid when they would go to different classes with different teachers.
5. Describe how you think CHS prepared you for your internship: I think that CHS prepared me for my internship because it helped me to learn how to interact with people professionally and respectfully. CHS also helped to teach me to reach out for help and for opportunities, which made my internship experience and transition much smoother.
6. What did you love about your internship OR what is most memorable about your experience? The most memorable part of my internship experience were the people. My mentor is an amazing teacher and she was so kind and supportive throughout my whole internship. She really wanted me to succeed in my internship and she helped to guide me through the tough parts of the it. As well as her, the other staff and teachers all felt the same. They were all so supportive and helped me whenever I needed it. It really felt like everyone was rooting for the interns there. On top of that, the kids in the class were also wonderful and accepting as well. They were so kind and I enjoyed every day I got to spend with them. I felt so accepted and everyone was so kind that it made the transition from school to internship seamless.
7. Who would be a good candidate for this internship in the future? What qualities/skills/interests are important to have? I believe that anyone who has a passion for education or childcare would be an amazing candidate for this internship. To be able to succeed in an elementary classroom, one needs to be passionate about the children and their success, and want to really aid them on their path. Patience is an especially important skill to have if one wants to go into this internship or field as a whole.
8. Any last thoughts or reflections about your internship you want to share? (if not, do not include in your video) I wanted to take this section to thank both Mrs.O'Reilly and Ms.Stevens for the incredible opportunity I was presented with. I genuinely loved my internship and I feel that it was an amazing and enlightening experience. I am so grateful for everything that the SIP has given me, and I will honestly miss WAS class 1S. Thank you both so much.

CHS has also taught me to be organized and respectful of items that aren’t mine.

What did you love about your internship OR what is most memorable about your experience?: The most memorable thing about my internship experience was driving the golf cart, and taking photos in school and at sports games.

Who would be a good candidate for this internship in the future? What qualities/skills/interests are important to have?: A good candidate for this internship would be someone who is positive and personable. Sometimes athletes face injuries that aren’t always the best so it’s important to help keep them positive. I also think it’s important to be detail oriented and organized. There are lots of supplies and equipment in the med kits and trainers room. It’s important to make sure this equipment stays organized, easy to access, and doesn’t break.

Any last thoughts or reflections about your internship you want to share? (if not, do not include in your video): Overall, this past month has been a really positive experience for me. I would highly recommend it to anyone that is considering a career in athletic training, physical therapy, medicine, or even just learning ways to improve your own health and wellness.

My name is: Charlotte

I interned at: Madison Area YMCA

My internship experience was (one or more words to describe it): engaging and insightful as I interacted with a diverse array of individuals that broadened my understanding of work experiences at both the Madison Area YMCA and beyond.

Describe your role and responsibilities during your internship: During my internship, I worked in aquatics to organize the facility including the four-lane pool, eight-lane pool, and many other facets of the aquatics portion of the building. Furthermore, I aided in guarding and instructing as the aquatics department was short staffed specifically with the program director having a child during my last week. At member services, I worked front desk, helping greet members to strengthen my customer service skills as well as aiding in creating new passes, security checking new members, and answering phone calls and in person questions about the facility. Often, my familiarity with the aquatics department allowed me to better help those at the front desk.

Describe how you think CHS prepared you for your internship: Attending Chatham High School prepared me for my internship in that it provided me the communication and organizational skills for me to speak with a variety of members and employees to accomplish tasks and learn new skills as well as better help the YMCA organize different areas of paperwork and facilities.

What did you love about your internship OR what is most memorable about your experience? I loved learning about people’s experiences and life stories from their education to their early working experiences to finally the Madison Area YMCA. Specifically at the front desk, working for member services, there was much down time to speak with the other employees about their past and future endeavors. Learning these stories enlightened me that the path to employment and through education varies greatly depending on the individual and gave me a piece of mind that the future lacks linearity.

Who would be a good candidate for this internship in the future? What qualities/skills/interests are important to have? A good candidate for this internship in the future is anyone who is personable and capable of successfully communicating with people of all ages and backgrounds. It’s important to have customer service skills as interacting with members is a main part of the internship.

We essentially did whatever needed to be done at the Y. Whether it was organizing closets, files, or even leading senior technology classes we were there to help.

Describe how you think CHS prepared you for your internship:
CHS prepared me for this internship through the hard work that is needed to be successful at high school. I have learned many different skills such as getting through problems, working with others in a group setting, and communicating with the teacher, who is similar to our boss at the Y.

What did you love about your internship OR what is most memorable about your experience?
My most memorable experience at the Y was the after school care with the K-5 students. Around 3:00-4:00 kids would come to the Y for after school and would play outside for about an hour. We were assigned to watching them and making sure everyone was safe and having fun. I enjoyed talking to them and hearing all the stories and things they were excited about and joining in on some games of kickball. I also enjoyed helping the seniors with their technology questions.

Who would be a good candidate for this internship in the future? What qualities/skills/interests are important to have? A good candidate for this internship in the future is someone who is very flexible and adaptable to whatever is thrown their way. Some days we had to organize files and make copies, and others we were playing pickleball with senior citizens. It is a simple and fun internship if you have a good mindset.

Any last thoughts or reflections about your internship you want to share? I helped prepare their ingredients, clean up, wash dishes, and hang posters. I went to the grocery store to get particular ingredients too. While doing all of this, I learned so much.

Describe how you think CHS prepared you for your internship: I think all four years in CHS gave me a lot of maturing to prepare me for this internship. Without my years in CHS, I don't think I would've been as prepared, mentally, for this internship.

What did you love about your internship OR what is most memorable about your experience? I, personally, do not have the most kitchen experience and still was able to help the students out to the best of my ability. I the important things such as how to grade assignments and keep a class behaving well even as the year comes to an end. I also got to do fun things such as design bulletin boards for the class. With the year wrapping up during my internship, I also made copies of numerous handouts for the next year and organized the class, which made it so Ms. Goldberg would have a much easier transition to a new school year come the fall.

Describe how you think CHS prepared you for your internship: CHS prepared me for my internship because it taught me how to apply the things I’ve learned to projects and things other than just notes and tests. In this case, I took information the kids were learning and made a bulletin board about it, but with a creative theme and not just simple facts posted on it.

What did you love about your internship OR what is most memorable about your experience? What I loved about this internship was getting to be back in the classroom with one of my favorite teachers from middle school. I remembered my time in Ms. Goldberg’s class as very fun and nurturing because of Ms. Goldberg’s constant positive attitude, so it was really nice to shadow her and see her continue to have this attitude with new students.

Who would be a good candidate for this internship in the future? What qualities/skills/interests are important to have? A good candidate for this internship in the future would be someone who likes interacting with kids, since they would be around them constantly. Because of this, it is important for this candidate to have patience, be more on the outgoing side, and able to joke around, since middle schoolers can say some interesting things at times.

Along with the other interns, I made trips to storage units, rearranged the furniture in houses to better display them for a sale, collect items to be sold, put price stickers on such items, donated unwanted things to the library/thrift shop, set up signs in town to advertise, and helped during open houses to moving things to peoples cars after they were bought.

Describe how you think CHS prepared you for your internship: CHS prepared me for this internship because I have done lots of hard work over the years and this work was honestly more fun than challenging. The work I had to do was more labor-intensive and I think CHS helped me breeze through some of the more logistical aspects of the job.

What did you love about your internship OR what is most memorable about your experience? I loved that I got to be with my friends and find some really cool things being sold that we could laugh about or enjoy.

Who would be a good candidate for this internship in the future? What qualities/skills/interests are important to have? I think it is important for a future intern to be friendly because they will be working with lots of people every day. It is a perfect job for someone with patience and a good work ethic that would be able to help do something physical at a moment's notice.

Any last thoughts or reflections about your internship you want to share?
Washington Avenue School - Sofia Coutras

My name is: Sofia Coutras

I interned at: Washington Avenue Elementary School in Mrs. Lungo’s first grade classroom

My internship experiences was super fun and really enlightening. I had such a great time and experience over this past month. It was the perfect balance of responsibility and work while not being too demanding or overwhelming.

During the internship every day I would come in and the first thing I would do is grade the students homework while they were doing their morning work. I would also grade their morning work as they handed it in. If they got a question wrong I would call them over to my desk and explain it to them and have them attempt it again until they understood and got it right. Then throughout the day I would do various things. I would help the students with assignments they were doing in class. I would make copies for Mrs Luongo and put together projects/assignments for the next school year. I would typically read a short book to the class when it was reading time, and then sometimes I would read individually with the students during independent reading. And then aside from everyday routine I would do whatever Mrs. Luongo needed my help with.

CHS definitely prepared me for having to interact with teachers and administrators in a school environment and cultivating my communication skills to be able to interact and communicate what I needed in a professional manner. As well as preparing me for the dynamics between teacher and student. Of course 1st grade is much more different than the high school, but the basic classroom environments had similarities for sure.

I loved just the day to day, coming in every morning and getting to see all the kids and working with Mrs. Luongo, the whole experience was just so amazing. I loved getting to teach the kids and help them learn when they didn’t understand something. I loved when we did independent reading and they would all ask to read to me to show me their reading skills. I just loved spending time with the kids every day.

A good candidate would definitely be someone who likes to be around kids. I feel like that’s pretty important, if you don’t like kids at all definitely do not do this because obviously you’re going to be around kids all day. Some more things that are important, definitely patience. Patience is extremely important around young children as well as energy. You kind of have to be able to keep your energy up throughout the day because the kids energy never decreases thats for sure. Flexibility is also a good quality to have. Being willing to work on whatever project your teacher needs you to do at that moment, it won’t always be the same schedule each day.

Some last thoughts, I just want to say thank you so much to Mrs. Luongo for being such an amazing mentor, I seriously had such a good time thanks to her, as well as everyone at Washington for being so welcoming and just willing to help. And of course thank you to Mrs. O’Reilly for running this whole program and giving me the chance to be part of it.

1. My name is: Olivia Bary
2. I interned at: Summit Fire Department
3. My internship experiences was: One of a kind and some of the best experiences I have ever had.
4. Describe your role and responsibilities during your internship: I was able to respond to calls with each shift of firefighters, participate in various training activities, help with daily truck checks and chores, and work on the administrative side.
5. Describe how you think CHS prepared you for your internship: Time management was a very important part of my internship since being on time every morning to be a part of “shape-up” which is the transition from one 24-hour shift to the next.
6. What did you love about your internship OR what is most memorable about your experience? It is not a surprise to me that there is a strong sense of camaraderie amongst the firefighters here. It truly is a second family within this department. This was most prevalent when we would all sit down for lunch and dinner.
7. Who would be a good candidate for this internship in the future? What qualities/skills/interests are important to have? Any person that is interested in public service and is eager to learn would be a great candidate. Having a Fire 1 certification is certainly helpful, especially when responding to calls. However, the most important thing is to be a good listener because this is a department filled with a group of extremely knowledgeable people that are very passionate and in love with the fire service.

My name is Stuart Garrett

I interned at Keller Williams Premier Properties in Summit, NJ.

My internship experience was informative, busy, and fun.

During my time at Keller Williams, I worked with the leadership team. These were the people that managed 300 real estate agents in the area. I did things like set up lawn signs and put away mail, but I also did things like calling agents and planning events. I also sat in on company calls and spent time with real estate agents on the job with them as well.

CHS prepared me for my internship by teaching me how to be organized, and how to work collaboratively with other people.

I loved the responsibilities that I was given as an intern there. I was trusted with a lot, and it made me feel like what I was doing was important, and that it actually mattered. I also loved the people that I worked with. Keller Williams believes in a strong culture in the workplace, and I felt right at home with everyone’s kindness and support.

I would say that people who are interested in real estate and people who are interested in management/ running a business would thrive in this internship.

Keller Williams hasn’t offered an internship before. However, when I reached out to them wondering if I could intern with them, they welcomed me with open arms. It was obvious to me that they cared deeply about the experience that I was getting, and wanted me to learn as much as possible. Anyone who is looking for an informative and meaningful internship should definitely consider Keller Willia

I had lots of responsibilities which included playing with the kids, doing arts and crafts, teaching, and cleaning up.

Describe how you think CHS prepared you for your internship:
CHS helped me prepare for my internship by teaching me punctuality for both attendance and assignments, and by being a somewhat similar school environment

What did you love about your internship OR what is most memorable about your experience?
What I loved most about my internship was hearing each kid’s story. At first the kids were weary of there being a new teacher around, however, after a few days it was like I was the older sibling. It was truly awesome to see how unique each and every one of the kids were. One of my favorite experiences while at Gingham Giraffe was going out on the front lawn and playing football with the kids.

Who would be a good candidate for this internship in the future? What qualities/skills/interests are important to have?
Someone who works well with children, has a lot of patience, and good leadership skills. This position might not be for everyone as most of the kids are around 5 years old which can sometimes be a handful.

My name is: Hope Amend

I interned at: Art With Heart Designs

My internship experience: enjoyable and insightful

Responsibilities: On the days I would be the first one to arrive at the boutique I would open the store and set everything up for the day. This would consist of turning on the lights and the music in the store as well as setting up the online credit card check out on the device stationed at the front desk. I assisted customers with their inquiries and their gift shopping needs. Additionally, there were days were I was asked to drive to various towns including Kenilworth, Linden, Newark, and North Arlington in order to pick up products from various companies for the store.

How did CHS prepare me: CHS prepared me for this internship experience because it allowed me to develop a work ethic prior to beginning this job. I knew from school that I would have to put time and energy into being successful in a job, and I accomplished that in my internship thanks to Chatham High School.

Most memorable: I picked up about 15 huge boxes of clothing from the printer, Felix, in Newark and we spent about 20 minutes trying to organize the boxes to fit into my car.

Good candidate: I believe a good candidate for this job would have to be flexible and be willing to work without a set schedule. I was asked to run errands as early as 8 in the morning, or not to come into the store to work until 12. I appreciate a flexible schedule because it allows me to complete other things in my day, but other people might not feel the same way.
