1. Why is it unwise for teachers to have students "trade and grade" each other's schoolwork?
2. How should teachers apply the "most comfortable/least comfortable ground rule when dealing with belligerent parents?

When I was growing up we would grade each others papers. I always felt bad if I did not make a good grade, and the child that graded knew the grade. Even though kids back then did not say anything to me, or were ugly it still was not a good feeling. I have had some upset parents when we have had conferences. Usually I let them talk and vent what is bothering them. Then I try to encourage them as a parent. I just let them know that I understand what they are saying, and I am hearing them. Then I usually tell them to hear my side of the story. After that things usually calm down.

The "trade and grade" is the long-familiar practice of having students swap papers and mark each other's answers. Why do we do this? Well, the reason make sense. It's convenient for the teacher. However, if we follow the model of great teachers and ask what the purpose is, we may decide to use class time far differently.

Trade and grade is not a good idea. You can't count on the grade being correct. You would have to go back and regrade to be sure. You really couldn't share the test with a parent that was concerned with their child's performance because of the uncertainty of the grading either.

If a parent is belligerent there may be a good reason. Listen to them and see if you can both understand the anger. It will make them feel validated if you argue back with them and they win with that anger. If you point out the reasons you may have made a decision they are not satisfied with they may change their attitude. I usually "kill them with kindness" and point out what a great parent they are for caring. They get confused and listen. It doesn't always work but it is worth a try. :)
V.
I remember doing the "trade and grade" papers all the time in school. Now, I realize it was probably to make things easier on the teacher, but I recall students being picked on if they didn't do well. It is a more negative practice, then positive. Children need to feel successful, and letting their peers know they aren't on a particular test just kills their self esteem. A child isn't going to strive to do better if they are feeling down.

Trade and grade has never been an option in my classroom. Students feel uncomfortable having others see their mistakes and areas of weakness. It doesn't benefit the students who made mistakes. We all learn from our mistakes and going over a test with students allows them the opportunity to figure out their problems and learn something from them.

Trade and grade makes most students uncomfortable. This chapter points out that those who are the least comfortable are the ones that change, however we cannot predict the change they will make. Is the teachers comfort worth the effect it has on their class? When dealing with belligerent parents, the teacher needs to stay calm and listen. Let them know you care about their child and concerns. If we are the most comfortable party in the situation, the parent will be the one to change their behavior.

If you want people to change, make them uncomfortable. Make sure the people that do the right thing feel comfortable. Great teachers treat everyone as if they were good. Always model appropriate behavior and seek input from capable students and colleagues.
