The most important thing that I learned in this workshop is understanding how a basic training module is being made.
I think in the future the module should cover practical lessons in real prisons, or even in the POs school.

From my point of view, this training is very important to obtain guidelines for the training of prison officers.

I found the workshop very interesting.
I learned that there are many similarities between the different countries, but also some differences.
The differences are mainly to do with the responsibilities we have outside of prison (transferring prisoners, use of weapons,....)

We have a number of shared problems: problem of engaging enough people for the job + image problem.

Therefore, developing training should, in my opinion, go hand in hand with job branding and developing a good and competent recruitment process.

I think it is a good idea to start working across borders. A candidate who speaks the language of the country would be allowed to work in another European country.
I also heard that most people are in favour of a specific school.
I also heard that most people are in favour of testing: you can only be hired if you also pass the tests.

In addition to learning competences and skills, attention should also be paid to morality. I think it is easier to teach people technical skills (e.g. how to use a gun, how to do a search, how certain security installations work,...), but how do you teach people the more personal skills (e.g. how to deal with stress, how to deal with aggression, how to deal with detainees who have mental problems, ....). I think this is the next challenge.
What about after basic training? How are you going to link this to future training.

People will also have to be given the time to do the training. Every country is under pressure to recruit people. Training is becoming secondary: we want to get people on the job as soon as possible.
We clearly also have an image problem about training: in most countries, newcomers are indeed told to forget what they have learned as quickly as possible, because things are different on the shop floor.
I think that is why we should definitely invest in mentors as well.
We need mentors on the shop floor who support the newcomers and also help them integrate the training into the workplace.
It must be a dynamic training.

Some of the most important things learned this week were how to properly manage the hours and homework for an PO, how not to suffocate with too much information but at the same time keep the balance of knowledge.
For the future, I would like to see in these workshops, in addition to 1-2 visits to a new penitentiary, the discussion with a former detainee who took the path of good, and for 1 day or a few hours, to intervene in discussions and to have an open discussion, so that we can find out the opinion behind closed doors. That opinion sometimes matters a lot, being a shortcut in our daily work.

The most challenging aspect and the most important in the same thime, was accomodating, at least in principio, the diferent national specifics whit the requirments of an european training course. It was important to find and structure what should be an european PO training course and how to join classroom training whith practical training. The multinational mix of the body of participants in Gent was esential for this task, as well as the proffesional experiance of the participants ( senior POs, management and also younger coleagues), and the esential combined contribution of diferent steakholders ( prison administrations, tradeunions and NGO), which can bring a comprehensive wieu on the topic.
For the next faze of the project I think is important to rafine the division, the mixt, between classroom training and practical training, along whit the composing the actual curicula and the text of the training manuals.
