In 1880 I began studying at Oxford. I was initially studying biology but soon found my passion for comparative psychology. While i was at Oxford i began to show an interest in the writings of Wilhelm Wundt. I then graduated from Oxford in 1890 and started studying with Wundt in Leipzig, Germany. I then went to earn my Ph.D. In physiology at the university of Leipzig in 1892.

After i got my Ph.D. I became a professor of psychology at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. I then established the phycological school of thought known as structuralism. I strongly believed that by systematically defining and categorizing the elements of the mind, reachers could better understand the mental processes. I utilized Wundt’s methods but with much more stringent guidelines. I only found interest in things that exist in the consciousness, most other things were not of importance to me. Based on my research, I was able to came to the conclusion that there are three essential elements that make up all consciousness: feelings, sensations, and images.

I have always found an interest in psychology but it wasn’t until I came across my now mentor, Wundt’s, work that it transformed into something much more than an interest. It became my passion, my life’s work. I was so fond of Wundt’s work on structuralism that I translated it from German to English to introduce it to the United States. I was also an original member of the American Psychology Association however I never once attended a meeting, I saw the APA as flawed and too accepting of applied psychology topics. So in 1904, I founded my my own group, the Experimentalists.
My group was known for its ban of women which I am proud to say continued until my death. Despite my refusal to allow women into my group my first doctoral student was Margaret Floy Washburn.
