She was born on May 19th 1880 without any siblings. Idola's father was a Montreal lawyer named Edmond and her mother's name was Emma. Idola went to an all  girls Catholic school and took courses for stage directing at a theatre owned by Julia Bennati. In the 1900's she chose to make a stage name for herself when she was performing. In 1903 she went to Paris to study with Constant Coquelin, and later went to the University of Paris.
