As a student diving into the world of set desgin for the first time I did thorough research to make sure I followed the correct steps in order to create the best possible sets for the show.

"Start by familiarising yourself with the script or the vision of the production. This will help you identify the key elements and themes that should be reflected in your set design. Consider the time period, location, and overall mood of the story." (Esther C.)

As the quote has mentioned, I extensively familiarised myself with the script as well as had discussions with the people in the production in order to make clear what the angle and vibe of our show would be. The premise of our show “Alice in Mind” is around the book of Alice in Wonderland and the two main characters jumping into the world of the book.

"Set design is more than just finding the right props and arranging them on a stage. It involves careful consideration of the space, the needs of the production, and the intended atmosphere. Before diving into the creative process, take some time to understand the basics of set design."(Esther C. 2024)

When it came to the sets and how to capture reality and fiction I had a discussion with the directors and decided to play with the depth of the stage. Downstage is reality -the psych ward- and upstage is fiction -Wonderland-.

https://www.tutti.space/blog/beginners-guide-to-set-design

For the fictional part of the play, when Alice and Alfred jump into the world of the book I wanted to tap into that more and bring the book pages on stage. So I decided to use four transparent screens with wheels which we had on campus in order to represent the pages. By utilising the wheels that the panels had we were able to incorporate them as part of our performance by choreographing moments in which actors flipped the panels in order to represent the book pages turning as well as the scene changes. The panels served as a frame for me as I wanted to sketch all the backdrops myself. One side of the four panels represents the forest of Wonderland. Each opposite side of each panel has one skecth depicting different sceneries that the characters visit throughout the play.
