“Health- related activity seeks to develop in the student:

An understanding of the role of health-related activity in the promotion of wellbeing

A sense of responsibility for her/his own good health and wellbeing.”

“Its inclusion is reflective of the view that promotion of skilled movement and fitness is an important means of developing and maintaining healthy lifestyles.”

(JCPE Syllabus, p37).

http://www.jcpe.ie/resources/JCPE_Syllabus.pdf

My rationale for choosing Health related Activity (HRA) is that at this stage of their lives, students need to start understanding the importance of leading a healthy and active lifestyle. HRA is a massively beneficial scheme for developing the students’ cardiovascular fitness, as well as some muscle endurance. These can be hugely beneficial if the student is involved in any extra curricular sports or teams. For those students who may not be the most ‘sporty’, it gives them a platform from which they can develop their own fitness levels and maintain a healthy lifestyle. It is undoubtedly our job as physical education teachers, not only to keep our students active and moving for one hour in a week, but to provide them with the relevant knowledge so as to enable them to maintain this activity when they no longer in school. Hopefully it will instil in them a desire to keep themselves active for their own benefit throughout the rest of their lives.

Organisation of the Learning Experience

Each lesson will start with an engaging warm up. The purpose of the warm up is to get the students heart rate up, and prepare their muscles for the main content of the lesson. With HRA in particular, some of the activities will require the students to be warmed up well. There will be an emphasis put on taking their heart rate before and after each warm up, so the students can see a reason why we perform these activities. This will also be done after the circuit or test has been completed. Each lesson will involve different skills being learned. These skills will not only guide the students through the HRA scheme, but they will provide the students with the tools to remain active and healthy throughout their lives. There will be a slight element of theory to each lesson, whether it be introducing heart rates, muscles in stretching, or VO2max levels, which will then be linked into the activity side of the lesson. Peer work will be relied on strongly throughout each lesson as students will peer assess each other as well as assist each other (peer assisted learning). The nature of a HRA scheme, means that the lesson is adaptable. For example, the weeks that the students will be doing circuits, if any student finds a task too difficult, it can be made simpler to ensure that they experience success with it. In each lesson, there will hopefully be a progression with regards their knowledge and understanding of Health Related Activity as a whole. Each lesson will look to provide students with a different set of skills that they can use to achieve and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

“Literacy and numeracy activity can become contextualised, meaningful and purposeful to the learner through many subjects and areas of learning.” (Implementation of the National Literacy and Numeracy Strategy). Literacy and Numeracy skills are now an essential part of all lessons and must be targeted to develop skills in order to participate “fully in the education system, to live satisfying and rewarding lives, and to participate as active and informed citizens in our society”. (Literacy and Numeracy for Learning and Life). The aim will be to seamlessly incorporate Literacy and Numeracy into each lesson without the pupils being aware they are focusing on these skills. This way pupils will be able to develop these skills and become an ‘informed citizen’ without realising that they are developing these lifelong skills.

I have chosen this model as i have noticed through talking to the students and from a student survey that was conducted in the school that they have very little knowledge on the benefits of Physical Activity. In the Well-being survey carried out in the school, the 1st Year students rated video games as being more important for their well-being than Physical Activity

Through talking to the students, it is clear that a large percentage of the class don't get the recommended amount of Physical Activity everyday. Even some of the students that are involved in Sport outside of the school only get take part in their organised Physical Activity.

I think that it is important to teach the students the why we are doing a particular form of exercise and what the benefits of the exercise is. This will hopefully encourage the students to become lifelong participants in Physical Activity.
